Assessing a Syndemic of Discrimination, Material Insecurity, Depression, Substance Use, and Violence Among Sexual and Gender Minorities in Nigeria Using Mixed Methods
Sexual and gender minority people (SGM) in Nigeria experience disproportionate HIV burden, with an HIV prevalence four to ten times higher than the national average. Better understanding the factors that create HIV vulnerability in this population is important for designing effective interventions, particularly in a context largely hostile to SGM. We assessed a conceptual model describing a syndemic of discrimination, material insecurity, depress…
Risk Compensation After Initiation of Daily Oral Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Among Sexual and Gender Minorities in Nigeria
Operationalizing the distribution of oral HIV self-testing kits to men who have sex with men (MSM) in a highly homophobic environment
This study showed the practical steps involved in operationalizing KOL support system distribution of HIVST that positively influenced the testing experience for the participants irrespective of the HIV status and engagement in care. KOLs are a reliable resource to leverage for ensuring that HIV self-test kit is utilized and HIV positive individuals are linked to treatment and care in homophobic environments
Disclosure of Same-Sex Sexual Practices to Family and Healthcare Providers by Men Who Have Sex with Men and Transgender Women in Nigeria
Disclosure of same-sex sexual practices by men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) may facilitate appropriate healthcare engagement, including risk assessment for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and negotiation of condom use with partners. However, disclosure may also generate stigma. In these cross-sectional analyses, MSM and TGW were categorized based on self-report of disclosure to family members and h…
Individual and partnership characteristics associated with consistent condom use in a cohort of cisgender men who have sex with men and transgender women in Nigeria
These findings suggest that individuals in relationships where partners were more open and encouraged safer sex were more likely to consistently use condoms. HIV prevention programs should consider leveraging communication to sexual partners to encourage condom use as this may support condom use with other sexual partners. Given sustained and growing HIV and STI epidemics among MSM and TGW, even with pre-exposure prophylaxis scale-up, it is cruci…
HIV status disclosure by Nigerian men who have sex with men and transgender women living with HIV
HIV status disclosure to sexual partners was uncommon among Nigerian MSM and TGW living with HIV but was associated with improved HIV care outcomes. Disclosure was not associated with substantially increased experiences of stigma. Strategies to encourage HIV status disclosure may improve HIV management outcomes in these highly-marginalized populations with a high burden of HIV infection
Rising HIV prevalence among men who have sex with men in Nigeria
There's been a consistent and significant increase in HIV prevalence among MSM with about 10-percentage points relative increase per year over 7 years. Older MSM were more likely to be HIV positive and this may reflect their prolonged exposure to high risk sexual activities. Evidence based interventions are urgently needed to mitigate intra-group HIV transmission and propagation of HIV epidemic between MSM and the general population
High levels of bisexual behavior and factors associated with bisexual behavior among men having sex with men (MSM) in Nigeria
Nigerian men who have sex with men (MSM) have a high burden of HIV infection and are known to engage in bisexual behavior. This study presents the first data on characteristics and correlates of Nigerian men having sex with men and women (MSMW) in three Nigerian cities. Five hundred and fifty-seven MSM who engaged in anal sex with men completed a behavioral survey; 48.1% of these MSM also engaged in sex with women in the previous 2 months. MSMW d…
Attitudinal and Behavioral Factors Associated with Extramarital Sex Among Nigerian Men
Using couple data from a national survey, this article examines couple's characteristics associated with extramarital sex among Nigerian men. We found 15.4% of married men had extramarital sex in the past 12 months. Extramarital sex was significantly associated with men's attitude toward extramarital sex (OR = 1.7 [1.4–3.0]), early sexual debut (OR = 1.9 [1.6–2.3]), alcohol use (OR = 1.7 [1.4–2.1]), and intimate partner violence against wife (IPV…

Experiences of and responses to HIV among African and Caribbean communities in Toronto, Canada
African and Caribbean communities in Canada and other developed countries are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. This qualitative study of African and Caribbean communities in Toronto sought to understand HIV-related stigma, discrimination, denial and fear, and the effects of multiple intersecting factors that influence responses to the disease, prevention practices and access to treatment and support services. Semi-structured interviews we…
Challenges for the sexual health and social acceptance of men who have sex with men in Nigeria
Little research exists regarding men who have sex with men and sexual risk in Nigeria. Prior to the implementation of a targeted HIV/STI prevalence study, structured focus groups incorporating anonymous questionnaires were conducted with members of this population in secure locations in Nigeria. A purposive sample of men was recruited by word-of-mouth. Five focus groups were conducted with a total of 58 men. Mean age was 27 years (range 16-58); 6…
