Bayesian Multilevel Latent Class Profile Analysis
Multilevel latent class profile analysis (MLCPA) is a recently developed technique for understanding latent class dynamics in longitudinal studies; however, conventional maximum likelihood (ML) estimation may face challenges, particularly with small sample sizes or boundary solutions. As an alternative method, we propose a Bayesian estimation for MLCPA by employing non-informative prior distributions. In addition, we shed light on the underflow p…

Can We Spin Straw Into Gold? An Evaluation of Immigrant Legal Status Imputation Approaches
Researchers have developed logical, demographic, and statistical strategies for imputing immigrants’ legal status, but these methods have never been empirically assessed. We used Monte Carlo simulations to test whether, and under what conditions, legal status imputation approaches yield unbiased estimates of the association of unauthorized status with health insurance coverage. We tested five methods under a range of missing data scenarios. Logic…
A reanalysis of a behavioral intervention to prevent incident HIV infections
Project EXPLORE - a large-scale, behavioral intervention tested among men who have sex with men (MSM) at-risk for HIV infection - was generally deemed as ineffective in reducing HIV incidence. Using novel and more precise data analytic techniques we reanalyzed Project EXPLORE by including both direct and indirect paths of intervention effects. Data from 4296 HIV-negative MSM who participated in Project EXPLORE, which included 10 sessions of behav…
Mi??ing Data
Across all fields of research, the issue of missing data arises. In most studies, surveys, or experiments, there are instances of nonresponse that need to be appropriately dealt with to conduct reasonable statistical analyses. There are several types of missing data as well as ways to deal with incomplete data sets
If you stock it, will they buy it? Healthy food availability and customer purchasing behaviour within corner stores in Hartford, CT, USA
Objective Literature on food environments has expanded rapidly, yet most research focuses on stores and community characteristics without integrating customer-level data. The present study combines customer shopping behaviour with store food inventory data. Design Face-to-face interviews were conducted with customers shopping in corner stores to measure food shopping behaviour, household food security and demographics. Store inventories were cond…
Urban youth violence prevention
Purpose The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of The Leadership Program's Violence Prevention Project (VPP) – a 12‐session programme consisting of explicit curriculum‐based classroom instruction designed for adolescents to promote a range of communication skills associated with violence prevention and alter classroom norms about aggression and violence. Design/methodology/approach A multi‐site, quasi‐experimental effectiveness tr…
Heterosexual anal intercourse and HIV infection risks in the context of alcohol serving venues, Cape Town, South Africa
Anal intercourse likely plays a significant role in HIV infections among a small minority of South Africans who patronize alcohol serving establishments. Heterosexual anal intercourse, the most risky sexual behavior for HIV transmission, should not be ignored in HIV prevention for South African heterosexuals. However, this relatively infrequent behavior should not become the focus of prevention efforts
