No decision-maker is an Island
The present research examined the social context of information acquisition. The main purpose was to examine how decision-makers' information acquisition processes changed when they were provided access to expert advice. Results indicated that all decision-makers opted to acquire advice; however, they typically did so only after completing over 75% of their own information search. Decision-makers agreed more with the advice as task complexity inc…
Improving judgement with prepaid expert advice
Decision makers (“Judges”) often make decisions after obtaining advice from an Advisor. The two parties often share a psychological “contract” about what each contributes in expertise to the decision and receives in monetary outcomes from it. In a laboratory experiment, we varied Advisor Experitise and the opportunity for monetary rewards. As expected, these manipulations influenced advice quality, advice taking, and Judge post‐advice decision qu…
Factors that May Affect the Difficulty of Uncovering Hidden Profiles
Three experiments examined three factors that may impede the discovery of hidden profiles: commitment to initial decision, reiteration effect, and ownership bias. Experiment 1 examined whether groups in which members are not asked to make an initial decision before group discussion are more likely to uncover hidden profiles than groups in which members are asked to make an initial decision. Experiment 2 examined this commitment to an initial deci…

Personality in Extreme Situations
Culture and Social Prediction
Human behavior under uncertainty has been an important area of inquiry in social, decision making, and cognitive psychology for the past few decades. The current research examined the role of different types of information in enhancing individuals' confidence in making social predictions in a variety of uncertain situations across cultures. Chinese and American participants were given either individuating information (e.g., accomplishments) or re…

Confidence and Uncertainty in Judgmental Forecasting
Confidence and Uncertainty in Judgmental Forecasting
Multiple scenario analysis is used by many organizations for long-term planning, in part because the development of more than one scenario of the future is thought to prevent overconfidence in any one specific forecast. The present study attempts to clarify some of the questions concerning the cognitive effects of scenario presentation by distinguishing between confidence and subjective uncertainty. It examined the impact of different types of sc…
Cueing and Cognitive Conflict in Judge-Advisor Decision Making
Passion, Preference, and Predictability in Judgmental Forecasting
A study of 81 football fans showed that the strength of the wishful thinking bias was related to the desirability of outcome, an effect moderated by environmental uncertainty
Confidence depends on level of aggregation
The credible intervals that people set around their point estimates are typically too narrow ( cf. Lichtenstein, Fischhoff, & Phillips, 1982). That is, a set of many such intervals does not contain the actual values of the criterion variables as often as it should given the probability assigned to this event for each estimate. The typical interpretation of such data is that people are overconfident about the accuracy of their judgments. This pape…
The college recruitment interview
The present study investigated several issues concerning organizations' use of the campus interview for applicant evaluation and recruitment. Results indicated that: (1) recruiters showed little agreement on which topics should be covered in the interview; (2) individual recruiters failed consistently to cover topics they believed were important; (3) applicants reported the most frequently mentioned content dealt with non‐academic issues of unive…
Learning of Negative Cue Validities as a Function of Statistical Sophistication and Instruction
The effects of cue-criterion instructions on subjects' achievement, consistency, and matching were examined. The probability-learning task involved two cues which were negatively related to the criterion. Subjects varied in their degree of mathematical training prior to the experiment. On all measures, mathematical sophistication enhanced rate of performance. Increasingly detailed information about cue-criterion relationships and negative linear …
