Mental well-being and generativity as predictors of retirement preferences at the beginning of late adulthood
The study aimed to investigate whether mental well-being and generativity predict retirement preferences. Longitudinal data ( n = 201) were drawn from the Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Personality and Social Development (JYLS). Life satisfaction, psychological well-being, social well-being, and generativity were assessed at ages 42, 50, and 61. Preferred retirement age and willingness to continue working after retirement were assessed at age 61…
Outdoor mobility in senior housing residents and community-dwelling older people in different population density areas
The location of a senior house is meaningful and optimal for outdoor mobility when within easy reach but not too near amenities. Poorer outdoor mobility among senior housing residents may reflect their adjustment to a new home environment and life situation, e.g., becoming a widow
Social Mobility and Health-Related Quality of Life Trajectory Classes Among Older Women and Men
Objectives Changes in socioeconomic status (SES) during life may impact health in old age. We investigated whether social mobility and childhood and adulthood SES are associated with trajectories of health-related quality of life (HrQoL) over a 17-year period. Methods We used data from the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study ( n = 2003, 46% men, mean age 61.5 years). Social mobility was derived from childhood SES, obtained from healthcare records, and re…
Active Aging in Senior Housing Residents and Community-Dwelling Older Adults
Despite the social and supporting environment, senior housing residents' possibilities for leading an active life seem to be compromised, potentially leading to an unmet activity need
Body composition in male lifelong trained strength, sprint and endurance athletes and healthy age-matched controls
IntroductionAging involves many physiological processes that lead to decreases in muscle mass and increases in fat mass. While regular exercise can counteract such negative body composition outcomes, masters athletes maintain high levels of exercise throughout their lives. This provides a unique model to assess the impact of inherent aging. The present study compared lean mass and fat mass in young and masters athletes from different sports to ag…

Ontological diversity in gaming disorder measurement
Gaming-related health problems have been researched since the 1980s with numerous different ontologies as reference systems, from self-assessed ‘game addiction’ to ‘pathological gambling’ (in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders [DSM]-IV), ‘internet gaming disorder’ (in the third section of the DSM-5) and most recently ‘gaming disorder’ (in the International Classification of Diseases [ICD]-11). Our goal was to investigate ho…
Work incapacity among family caregivers
BACKGROUND: Family caregiving-related physical and mental health problems may lead to work incapacity in employed caregivers. The aim of this study was to quantify sickness absences and disability pensions (SADP) among high-intensity family caregivers available to the labour market compared with a control population. METHODS: The study sample included all individuals in Finland, who had received caregiver's allowance and were available to the lab…
Mental, Physical and Social Functioning in Independently Living Senior House Residents and Community-Dwelling Older Adults
Senior houses provide social interaction and support, potentially supporting older people's physical and mental functioning. Few studies have investigated functioning of senior house residents. The aim was to compare functioning between senior house residents and community-dwelling older adults in Finland. We compared senior house residents ( n = 336, 69% women, mean age 83 years) to community-dwelling older adults ( n = 1139, 56% women, mean age…
Body composition and changes in health-related quality of life in older age
In older community-dwelling adults, higher fat mass is, independent of lean mass, associated with lower physical HRQoL and greater decline in HRQoL. Prevention of adiposity may contribute to preservation of a good quality of life in older age
Midlife work ability and mobility limitation in old age among non-disability and disability retirees - a prospective study
Better midlife work ability may protect from old age mobility limitation among those who retire due to non-disability and disability. Promoting work ability in midlife may lead to more independent, active aging, regardless of type of retirement
A blunted diurnal cortisol response in the lower educated does not explain educational differences in coronary heart disease
