A fragment of colonial history
This paper deals with some hitherto unpublished information on the events leading up to the killing of Jakob Marengo by the British, and the manner of his death, on the 20 September 1907. This is discussed in the context of Marengo's role in the 1903–7 Nama uprising in what was then German South West Africa, and his place in the historiography of the colonial resistance movement of Namibia
The First Map of Swaziland, and Matters Incidental Thereto
The first topographical map of Swaziland was produced by A. M. Miller, and published by Stanford's Geographical Establishment in 1896. The map is seen as a product of the geopolitics of south-eastern Africa during the latter part of the nineteenth century. A possible link with the interests of the Royal Geographical Society in the area at that time is identified. The copy of the map in the Map Room of the Society, which is in mint condition, is o…

A distinction has been drawn between early geographical knowledge of Southern Africa and early maps showing the sub-continent, because a great deal of early geographical knowledge was not preserved in map form, but in geographical and historical texts.
