  • Multiproxy analysis reveals migration and potential origins of the first Christians in medieval Vilnius

Open Access•G Motuzaite Matuzeviciute, Rytis Jonaitis et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2026

Before Catholicism was officially adopted in AD 1387, the Lithuanian city of Vilnius was assumed to be largely pagan. Identification of Christian burials within a large medieval cemetery (late thirteenth–fourteenth centuries) in the city was therefore unexpected. Here, the authors employ multiproxy isotopic analyses of bone collagen, dentine and enamel to examine the origins of 15 individuals from the cemetery. Based on the results, the authors a…

Combining newly obtained stable isotope data with previously published data, 238 bulk collagen samples were analyzed, representing individuals from diverse socioeconomic and religious backgrounds. Statistical analyses, including one‐way ANOVA and univariate l…

  • Aortic paleopathology

Damia L Mialkowskyj, Justina Kozakaitė et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2025

This report investigates a probable aortic aneurysm in a skeleton from Kedainiai, Lithuania, assessing cardiovascular signs within a sample of 22 adults. Notably, sternal bone changes indicative of chronic aneurysmal pressure were observed. The remains, identified as those of a middle-aged adult male (ca. 50 years old), exhibited an oval-shaped perforation and surrounding erosion and remodeling on the sternal body, consistent with chronic pressur…

  • Life Across the River

    Open Access•Rūta Brindzaitė•ARTICLE•Archaeologia Lituana•2020

Studies aimed at considering the impact of industrialisation, urbanisation and modernisation on human health in 19th-century society are becoming increasingly relevant. Although it is exceptionally rare to encounter human skeletal material from the 19th century in present-day Lithuania, this study explores whether changes which occurred in that century had any impact on human health. This research presents the preliminary results of an anthropolo…

  • The Human Osteological Collection of Vilnius University

Open Access•Justina Kozakaitė, Rūta Brindzaitė et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeologia Lituana•2020

This article briefly presents the history of the human osteological collection stored at the Faculty of Medicine of Vilnius University. The birth of such collection can be traced back to the mid-19th century (1855) with the establishment of the Museum of Antiquities. Until the mid-20th century, human skeletal remains were gathered sporadically and selectively, by collecting either skulls or long bones. Since the late 20th century, the policy of s…
