From daily maternal worry to adolescents' emotion dysregulation
Based on the Systems Model of Privacy, this study examined within‐family associations between maternal worry about adolescents, maternal privacy invasion perceptions, and adolescent emotion dysregulation. Participants were 208 adolescent‐mother dyads (Adolescents: 56.7% female, M age = 15.00; Mothers: M age = 42.63) in mainland China. All participants completed daily diaries for 21 days. Both adolescents and mothers reported greater maternal inva…
Teachers’ feelings of burnout
Teacher burnout is theoretically and empirically assumed to impair their professional behavior. This could manifest itself in their communion (i.e., teacher friendliness) and interpersonal agency (i.e., social influence), as the two central dimensions of interpersonal teacher behavior, which in turn could negatively affect student outcomes. This study is one of the first to test this entire assumed process chain of effects. We extend prior resear…
Guidelines for reporting research using systematic coding of observed human behaviour (SCOBe)
Systematic coding of observed human behaviour (SCOBe) is used across disciplines and topics but methodological reporting is often incomplete. We developed internationally generated, interdisciplinary guidelines for methodological reporting of such research. Using Delphi methodology, a working group of 22 experts sought group consensus in three rounds. Participants first assessed an initial set of reporting criteria (round 1). Next, in interactive…
Changes in Adolescents’ Covid-19-Health-Related Stress, Parent-Adolescent Relationships, and Mental Health During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Previous studies investigated short-term effects of COVID-19 on families. However, much is unknown about how families with adolescents fared throughout the pandemic, as well as factors that might explain interindividual differences in adjustment. The current study used latent change score models to investigate associations between changes in adolescents’ mental health, parent-adolescent relationship quality, and COVID-19-health-related stress fro…
Control, anxiety and test performance
BackgroundThis study investigated the role of different test anxiety components (affective, cognitive, motivational and physiological) as mediators between control and performance as proposed by Pekrun's control-value theory (CVT). While all components were assessed via self-report, the physiological component was additionally assessed via electrodermal activity (EDA).AimsWe examined the relative impact of the self-reported anxiety components and…
When closeness is effortful
BackgroundStudent perceptions of teachers' interpersonal closeness positively affect their emotions. If closeness is, however, effortful for the teacher (i.e., emotional labour, signalling less genuine closeness), this may undermine these positive effects. We tested this assumption by using student reports and external observations of teacher closeness and ambulant measures of teacher heart rate, to gauge teachers' physiological effort connected …
Development of parent-adolescent relationships during the Covid-19 pandemic
The extensive measures to prevent spread of COVID-19 have had a major impact on families' daily lives. Changes in family routines and experiences of COVID-19-related stress might negatively impact the quality of parenting and the parent-adolescent relationship. However, using active coping strategies might be associated with limited negative or even positive changes in the parent-adolescent relationship. This longitudinal, multi-informant, and pr…
