Late Saalian climatic oscillations – revision of pollen record in Poland compared to other evidences
Advantages and limitations of archaeometric analysis of archaeological metals
Too young for tinder? The palaeoecological context and possible function of subfossil fungi (basidiomes) found in the settlement from the Early Iron Age in Podłęże, S Poland
Two well-preserved fungal remains (basidiomes of polypores Fomes fomentarius and Fomitopsis pinicola) were found in a fossil peatbog in Podłęże, near Kraków (S Poland), in the context of culture layers dated to the Early Iron Age (mid-1st millennium BCE). Their context, age, and the cause of their occurrence in peat, which is exceptional, are discussed. Due to the location on the outskirts of an inhabited prehistoric settlement and because of the…
Vegetation on the Wawel Hill, Cracow (Poland) in the early Middle Ages based on the fragmentary pollen record. Archaeological research excavation in the basement of building No. 9
Palynological research was carried out on layers archaeologically dated to the early Middle Ages in the basement of the former Austrian hospital at Wawel. The interpretation was based on the sparse number of sporomorphs presented in the samples, not on the percentages. At the end of the first millennium, on the Wawel Hill and in its vicinity, an open landscape developed with a mosaic of plant communities, including ruderal ones, fields, pastures, …

Asháninka Palm Management and Domestication in the Peruvian Amazon
Palms are a natural resource that has been abundantly used by Amerindians for centuries. Only a few palm domestications have been reported in the American tropics, where there is great diversity of the Arecaceae family. We report the results of a survey combining ethnobotanical and ecological methods to study the past and present management and distribution of palms by the Ashaninka indigenous people from the Tambo river region in the Peruvian Am…
Radiocarbon Distance Between Calendar Dates
The calibration procedure, and especially the nonlinear shape of the calibration curve, makes analyzing a possible dating result a far from straightforward process. This is especially so if the goal is to distinguish between two relatively close events. Proposed herein is a calculator, or alternatively a graph, which enables reading of the difference between two radiocarbon ages corresponding to their expected calendar ages. The result may surpri…
Information content of zero pollen counts in Holocene profiles
Percentage-based pollen diagrams display the relative proportions of various taxa in relation to a stated pollen sum. A zero count for a given palynological taxon, as recorded for a given sample, does not mean that the taxon was absent at the time and place represented by the sample, but only that the concentration of palynomorphs is, at most, below the detection limit of the method. Here we apply the statistical concept of the confidence interva…
Application of the Triple-Photomultiplier Liquid Spectrometer Hidex 300 Sl in Radiocarbon Dating
The Hidex 300 SL is a liquid scintillation analyzer with an automatic sample changer and a triple-photomultiplier tube detection assembly that registers triple- as well as double-coincidence spectra. In the triple mode, the background in the 14 C window is 13.7 cpm ( 14 C standard 30.8 cpm; =154.3 cpm/5.01), so the factor of merit equals 8.7. The triple-to-double coincidence ratio (TDCR) allows for determining the 14 C counting efficiency, the qu…
Calibration of Mangerud'S Boundaries
The “calibration” of arbitrarily defined (in some sense, “conventional”) ages, given in conventional radiocarbon years BP, is now becoming necessary because the term “radiocarbon age” is used less often in archaeological and Quaternary practice. The standard calibration procedure is inappropriate here because Mangerud's boundaries are not measurement results. Thus, another approach to the problem is proposed in order to model the natural situatio…
Systematic Bias of Radiocarbon Method
Systematic bias of dates can became statistically significant regarding the growing global number of dates connected with the calibration curve plateau. For example, samples of true age in the span 800–700 BC are dated to be roughly 100 younger, on average. The curve of expected bias for a given age is presented. To avoid such a bias, the Bayesian paradigm probably must be modified in some way
Palaeolimnology of Lake Zeribar, Iran, and its Climatic Implications
Lake Zeribar sediments covering the time period of the last 25,000 years were examined for the contents of seeds, fruits, Characeae, diatoms, and molluscs. Reconstructions of the variations in the lake water level, salinity, and trophy suggest a sequence of climatic changes. Three pronounced stages of low and varying lake-water level occurred ca. 17,700–15,400, 12,600–12,000, and 10,000–6000 cal yr BP. Some water-level changes were correlated wit…
Gliwice Radiocarbon Dates XI
The following list presents results of dating archaeological samples from Poland processed between 1979 and 1985. Three carbon dioxide-filled proportional counters (L1, L2 and L3) of different sizes were used for dating (Pazdur et al. 1982). Procedures for sample pretreatment, counting, statistical analysis and age calculations were essentially the same as previously described (Pazdur et al. 1982, 1985). All results are reported as conventional 1…
Possibilities for Reconstructing Radiocarbon Level Changes During the Late Glacial by Using a Laminated Sequence of Gościaż Lake
Laminated sediments of Gościaż Lake can be used as an independent source of material for calibrating the radiocarbon time scale. The varve chronology is based on three long cores from the deepest part of the lake, with one additional core from the second deepest part. From pollen and Cladocera spectra and stable isotope and chemical content sequences, we have determined the Allerød(AL)/Younger Dryas(YD) and Younger Dryas/Preboreal(PB) boundaries …
Radiocarbon and Varve Chronologies of Annually Laminated Lake Sediments of Gościαz Lake, Central Poland
A sequence of annually laminated sediments of the Gościαz Lake spans ca 13,000 yr and is actually the longest known continuous sequence in the world. 14 C age measurements were performed on organic and carbonate fractions of bulk samples of laminated sediments from core GO. Accurate measurements of varve thickness performed on the lower part of cores G1 and G2 were used to establish a floating varve chronology covering ca 10,000 yr. Matching of c…

Gliwice Radiocarbon Dates VII
The following list contains the measurements of archaeologic samples made during 1978 and 1979 using carbon-dioxide-filled proportional counters. Most of the samples were dated with counter No. 3 (L3) filled to 1 or 2 atm pressure (Mościcki and Zastawny, 1977). Our counter No. 1 (L1) previously described (Mościcki and Zastawny, 1976) has been remounted and is now operating at 2 atm pressure of carbon dioxide. Samples measured with this counter ha…
Gliwice Radiocarbon Dates VIII
The following list sums up the results of radiocarbon dating of geologic samples obtained mostly during 1978 and 1979. Measurements have continued with the same proportional counters, pretreatment procedures, carbon dioxide purification, measurement and calculation as described previously (Pazdur et al , 1982). Ages are reported as conventional radiocarbon dates in years before ad 1950. No corrections for 13 C/ 12 C ratio were made for samples re…
Age Reporting of Very Old Samples
Problems of the statistical interpretation of radiocarbon age measurements of old samples are discussed, based on the notion of fiducial probability distribution. A probability density function of age has been given. A detailed discussion of different facets of the probability distribution of age has led us to the confirmation of the use of 2σ as the best limiting value between the regions of finite and infinite dates. It has been proposed to mak…
