  • Decoupling geographical constraints from human mobility

    Open Access•Louis Boucherie, Benjamin F Maier et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2025•Referencias: 54

  • Covid-19 lockdown induces disease-mitigating structural changes in mobility networks

Open Access•Frank Schlosser, Benjamin F Maier et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2020

Significance During the COVID-19 pandemic, mobility restrictions have proved to be an effective mitigation strategy in many countries. To apply these measures more efficiently in the future, it is important to understand their effects in detail. In this study, we use mobile phone data to uncover profound structural changes in mobility in Germany during the pandemic. We find that a strong reduction of long-distance travel rendered mobility to be m…

  • Effective containment explains subexponential growth in recent confirmed Covid-19 cases in China

    Open Access•Benjamin F Maier, Dirk Brockmann•ARTICLE•Science•2020

Containment works National governments have taken different approaches in response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, ranging from draconian quarantines to laissez-faire mitigation strategies. In data from China collected in February 2020, Maier and Brockmann noticed that, unexpectedly, the epidemic did not take off exponentially. Nonexponential spread occurs when the supply of susceptible individuals is depleted on a time scale…

    Open Access•Florian Klimm, Benjamin F Maier•ARTICLE•Network Science•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 4

We discuss a two-week summer course on “Network Science” and “Complex Systems” that we taught for 15 German high-school pupils of ages 16–18. In this course, we covered topics in graph theory, applied network science, programming, and dynamic systems alike. We find that “Network Science” is a well-suited course for introducing students to university-level mathematics. We reflect on difficulties regarding programming exercises and the discussion o…
