  • A SNP , Gene, and Polygenic Risk Score Approach of Oxytocin‐Vasopressin Genes in Adolescents’ Loneliness

Open Access•Maaike Verhagen, Karin J H Verweij et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2020

Not much is known regarding underlying biological pathways to adolescents’ loneliness. Insight in underlying molecular mechanisms could inform intervention efforts aimed at reducing loneliness. Using latent growth curve modeling, baseline levels and development of loneliness were studied in two longitudinal adolescent samples. Genes ( OXTR , OXT , AVPR 1A , AVPR 1B ) were examined using SNP ‐based, gene‐based, and polygenic risk score ( PRS ) app…

  • Large-scale GWAS reveals insights into the genetic architecture of same-sex sexual behavior

    Open Access•Andrea Ganna, Karin J H Verweij et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2019

The genetics of sexual orientation Twin studies and other analyses of inheritance of sexual orientation in humans has indicated that same-sex sexual behavior has a genetic component. Previous searches for the specific genes involved have been underpowered and thus unable to detect genetic signals. Ganna et al. perform a genome-wide association study on 493,001 participants from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Sweden to study genes asso…

  • Associations between loneliness and personality are mostly driven by a genetic association with Neuroticism

    Open Access•Abdel Abdellaoui, Hsi‐Yuan Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2019

Objective Loneliness is an aversive response to a discrepancy between desired and actual social relationships and correlates with personality. We investigate the relationship of loneliness and personality in twin family and molecular genetic data. Method Phenotypic correlations between loneliness and the Big Five personality traits were estimated in 29,625 adults, and in a group with genome‐wide genotype data ( N = 4,222), genetic correlations we…

  • Genetic correlates of social stratification in Great Britain

    Open Access•Abdel Abdellaoui, David Hugh-Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2019•Citada por: 30•Referencias: 65

  • Causal associations between body mass index and mental health

Nina van den Broek, Jorien L Treur et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2018•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 19

BACKGROUND: Body mass index (BMI) is correlated negatively with subjective well-being and positively with depressive symptoms. Whether these associations reflect causal effects is unclear. METHODS: We examined bidirectional, causal effects between BMI and mental health with Mendelian randomisation using summary-level data from published genome-wide association studies (BMI: n=339 224; subjective well-being: n=204 966; depressive symptoms: n=161 4…

  • Parental solicitation, parental control, child disclosure, and substance use

    Open Access•Monique Delforterie, Monique J Delforterie et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity and Health•2016•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 7

Despite mean level differences in various factors, we did not find evidence of an interaction effect of the sources of parental knowledge with ethnic background on alcohol and cannabis use. This suggests that theories and prevention strategies focusing on these sources of parental knowledge in relation to substance use can be applicable to both native and immigrant Dutch adolescents
