Comparative micro-XRF study of objects from the Hungarian conquest period of Hajdú-Bihar County, Hungary
In recent years, material composition analysis has become increasingly important in evaluating finds from the Hungarian Conquest period in the Carpathian Basin. As a result, compositional data for around 300 items is now available, primarily in Hungarian-language publications. Our goal is to introduce this field to an international audience. Previous studies focused on individual graves, cemeteries, or sites. During the preparation of a summary v…
Pixe analysis of Late Bronze Age situlae from the eponymous Hajdúböszörmény-Csege-halom I hoard and Sényő-Dajkahegy, Northeastern Hungary
The paper introduces the particle-induced X-ray emission analysis (PIXE) of two Hajdúböszörmény-type situlae from the eponymous Hajdúböszörmény I hoard (collection of the Hungarian National Museum, Budapest) and Sényő (collection of the Jósa András Museum, Nyíregyháza). Both situlae are representative types of the period between 1080 and 960 BC, Ha B1, or the ‘Hajdúböszörmény hoard horizon’ of the Hungarian Late Bronze Age. The obtained results a…
Creating Histories
A Copper Age settlement and cemetery was fully excavated at Rákóczifalva-Bivaly-tó Site 1/C in 2005-2007, making it possible to compare the use of its material culture in closely related, coeval, but different archaeological contexts. Such a rare set of circumstances allows the authors to highlight methodological issues associated with the distorting effect of archaeological finds made on sites where only settlement or burial data are available, …

Trans-National Access in the field of heritage science at the Laboratory of Ion Beam Applications, MTA Atomki
The Laboratory of Ion Beam Applications at MTA Atomki served as a Trans-National Access (TNA) host within the CHARISMA EU FP7 project. Although cultural heritage research is only one of the several applications in the laboratory, its importance is growing thanks to the success of CHARISMA. The variety of samples and analytical questions in this field provides constant motivation for development of the instrumentation and adaptation of new techniq…
Micro‐ Pixe Geochemical Fingerprinting of Nephrite Neolithic Artifacts from Southwest Bulgaria
Neolithic artifacts made of nephrite, □Ca 2 (Fe,Mg) 5 Si 8 O 22 (OH) 2 , are found at prehistoric settlements in Bulgaria. This study investigates these objects based on particle induced X‐ray emission using a scanning nuclear microprobe (micro‐ PIXE technique). Seven nephrite artifacts from the Neolithic sites of Kovachevo, Bulgarchevo and Galabnik in southwest Bulgaria were analyzed to quantify their composition and to establish if a correlatio…
