  • Do Manual and Voxel-Based Morphometry Measure the Same? A Proof of Concept Study

Open Access•Niels K Focke, Sarah Trost et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2014

Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) is a commonly used method to study volumetric variations on a whole brain basis. However, it is often criticized for potential confounds, mainly based on imperfect spatial registration. We therefore aimed to evaluate if VBM and "gold standard" manual volumetry are measuring the same effects with respect to subcortical gray matter volumes. Manual regions-of-interest were drawn in the hippocampus, amygdala, nucleus acc…

  • Effects of Frontal Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Emotional State and Processing in Healthy Humans

Open Access•Michael A Nitsche, Janka Koschack et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2012

The prefrontal cortex is involved in mood and emotional processing. In patients suffering from depression, the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) is hypoactive, while activity of the right DLPFC is enhanced. Counterbalancing these pathological excitability alterations by repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) or transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) improves mood in these patients. In healthy subjects, however, rTMS…

  • Pharmacological Modulation of the Short-Lasting Effects of Antagonistic Direct Current-Stimulation Over the Human Motor Cortex

Open Access•Leila Chaieb, Andrea Antal et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2012

Combined administration of transcranial direct current-stimulation (tDCS) with either pergolide (PER) or d-cycloserine (d-CYC) can prolong the excitability-diminishing effects of cathodal, or the excitability enhancing effect of anodal stimulation for up to 24 h poststimulation. However, it remains unclear whether the potentiation of the observed aftereffects is dominated just by the polarity and duration of the stimulation, or the dual applicati…

  • Excitability changes induced in the human motor cortex by weak transcranial direct current stimulation

    Open Access•Michael A Nitsche, Walter Paulus•ARTICLE•The Journal of Physiology•2000

In this paper we demonstrate in the intact human the possibility of a non-invasive modulation of motor cortex excitability by the application of weak direct current through the scalp. Excitability changes of up to 40 %, revealed by transcranial magnetic stimulation, were accomplished and lasted for several minutes after the end of current stimulation. Excitation could be achieved selectively by anodal stimulation, and inhibition by cathodal stimu…
