  • Predicting Emotional and Behavioral Reactions to Collective Wrongdoing

    Open Access•Fabian Bernhard, Udo Rudolph•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Decision…•2024•Referencias: 7

Past research has shown that people are inconsistent when making predictions about emotions and moral behaviors following their own wrongdoing. However, it is less clear how people react when they did not cause the wrongdoing themselves but the group or collective they associate with. The present paper investigates people's reactions to collective wrongdoing and the question (1) whether the prediction of the experience of group‐based guilt is rel…

  • An Attributional Analysis of Reactions to Poverty

Open Access•Bernard Weiner, Douglas Osborne et al.•ARTICLE•Personality and Social Psychology…•2011

An attributional analysis of reactions to poverty is presented. The article begins by discussing the perceived causes of poverty and their taxonomic properties (locus, stability, and controllability). One antecedent of causal beliefs, political ideology, is then examined in detail, followed by a review of the effects of causal beliefs on emotions and behavior. It is contended that helping the poor is a moral issue, but the moral evaluation concer…

  • The Discovery of Common-Sense Psychology

    Rainer Reisenzein, Udo Rudolph•ARTICLE•Social Psychology•2008•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 14

This special issue of Social Psychology commemorates the 50th anniversary of Fritz Heider’s 1958 book The Psychology of Interpersonal Relations. The contributions to the special issue address the history and current state of attribution research, or illustrate contemporary research in the field. The historical articles document that Heider’s analysis of causal attribution and of common-sense psychology was significantly influenced by his academic…

  • Covariation, Causality, and Language

    Udo Rudolph•ARTICLE•Social Psychology•2008•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 2

Implicit verb causality refers to the phenomenon that even minimal descriptions of interpersonal events (e.g., A dominates B, A amuses B) elicit causal attributions. Two experiments investigated whether children of different age groups are able to (a) perceive the causality implicit in interpersonal verbs and (b) to detect patterns of cause-effect covariation (consensus and distinctiveness) presumably mediating the verb causality effect. Experime…

  • On the Usefulness of Memory Skills in Social Interactions

Open Access•Isabell Winkler, Klaus Jonas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•2008•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 13

The present experiment introduces a modification of the iterated prisoner's dilemma (PD). In contrast to classical dilemma situations with only one interaction partner, participants (N = 120) interacted with five fictitious interaction partners within one game, either in a random order (change condition) or against each of the interaction partners in succession (block condition). The authors assume that the change condition simulates the social i…

  • Three Principles of Explanation

Open Access•Udo Rudolph, Ulrich Von Hecker•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•2006•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 17

Two studies demonstrated that explanations of interpersonal events are governed by the principles of implicit verb causality and balance. In addition, the data indicate that subjectively imbalanced interpersonal events (e.g., John admires Jack because he is so arrogant) elicit processes designed to achieve imbalance repair. In contrast to previous studies, we analyzed subjective (rather than objective) balance and imbalance as well as the cogniti…

  • A meta‐analytic review of help giving and aggression from an attributional perspective

    Udo Rudolph, Scott C Roesch et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition & Emotion•2004

The present review syntheses 64 investigations on the determinants of helping and aggression involving more than 12,000 subjects, providing empirical tests of Weiner's (1986, 1995) theory of social conduct. A meta‐analytic test of the proposed causal cognition‐emotion‐behaviour sequence reveals that judgements of responsibility determine the emotional reactions of anger and sympathy, and that these emotional reactions, in turn, directly influence…

  • Implicit Verb Causality

    Open Access•Udo Rudolph•ARTICLE•Journal of Language and Social…•1997•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 19

Two experiments are reported to analyze the psychological causality implicit in language. In Study 1, an extension of the existing verb classifications is empirically tested to account for the finding that many action verbs give rise to attributions to the sentence object. Study 2 examines whether implicit causality for these agent-evocator verbs is mediated by the same mechanisms that are assumed to mediate this effect for other kinds of interpe…

  • The self‐reference effect

    Open Access•Udo Rudolph•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•1993•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 39

A number of investigators demonstrated that processing verbal stimuli by encoding them in reference to the self facilitates recall for these stimuli, compared with other kinds of semantic processing. On the basis of a critical discussion of the relevant research, it is hypothesized that the superiority of self‐reference is due to some specific features of semantic orienting tasks that serve as control groups for self‐referent encoding. This hypot…
