Acceptability and Feasibility of Home-Based Human Papillomavirus Self-Testing as Primary Screening for Cervical Cancer Detection in the State of Alabama
Alabama has the highest cervical cancer mortality and sixth highest incidence rates nationwide. We assessed the acceptability and feasibility of at-home HPV self-testing for cervical cancer screening in Alabama. Eligible women (ages 30–64y, no Pap last 3.5y, not being pregnant, no hysterectomy history, and satisfying either rural residency or being African American) were recruited by community health workers (CHW), foodbanks, churches, and truste…
Revitalizing the ICPD Programme of Action on the International Development Agenda
Since the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), there have been notable improvements in reproductive health and rights. However, these overall gains obscure deep inequalities, and recent setbacks during and after the COVID‐19 pandemic highlight the fragility of this progress. The reproductive health agenda is extensive yet remains underfunded and underperforming. Careful thought is needed on how to retain reproductiv…
Improvement of serum folate status in the US women of reproductive age with fortified iodised salt with folic acid (Fisfa study)
Objective: Mandatory folic acid fortification of enriched grains has reduced neural tube defect prevalence in several countries. We examined salt as an additional vehicle for folic acid fortification. The primary objective was to examine the change in serum folate concentration after 1 month of consumption of fortified iodised salt with folic acid (FISFA) among women of reproductive age. The secondary objectives were to examine (1) the feasibilit…
Between a Rock and a Hard Place
This article analyzes how and why a near-total abortion ban was recently secured by a populist ruling party with support from Catholic Church leaders and lay groups following earlier passage of one of the most restrictive abortion laws in Europe. The paper further examines the public health threats posed by these measures, which have long been under-researched. These policy shifts are situated within the deeply embedded context of Poland's aborti…
Dobbs
On June 24, 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. By voting to uphold Mississippi’s law banning most abortions after 15 weeks, the Court overturned Roe v. Wade, eliminating the federal standard protecting a woman’s right to abortion and reversing nearly 50 years of legal precedent. The ruling returned regulation of abortion to the states, which are responding by implementing bans or prot…

A Comparative Study of Abortion Policymaking in Brazil and South America
In Brazil and South America, religion, custom, and law have long made abortion taboo and forced it underground. Major changes sweeping the region are now making abortion increasingly discussed and contested. This article uses conceptual heuristics, theoretical insights, and comparisons across contexts to understand this situation. It explains why legal reforms have occurred in some settings (Colombia, Mexico City) but not in others (Brazil, Chile…

Honor Killings in the Middle East and North Africa
A systematic review of the research literature on honor killings in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) indicates a paucity of studies relative to the presumed magnitude of the problem. Forty articles were reviewed and critically appraised, of which only 9 contained primary data and 11 presented original secondary analyses. Despite a recent increase in published studies, persistent methodological limitations restrict the generalizability of f…
Abortion in Latin America
Latin America is undergoing profound social, economic, political, demographic, and epidemiologic change. Reproductive health indicators have generally improved over the past two decades, but most pregnancies are still unintended and more than 4 million are terminated annually. Clandestine abortions necessitated by restrictive legal and social structures cause more than 1,000 deaths and 500,000 hospitalizations per year, primarily among poor and m…

What We Know About Intimate Partner Violence in the Middle East and North Africa
Little is known about intimate partner violence in the Middle East and North Africa. This review synthesizes and critically evaluates the literature. Of 59 studies found, only 21 reported data on the prevalence of such violence or on beliefs regarding its justification, covering just 9 countries. Spousal abuse is pervasive and widely accepted. Victims are of all ages and are more likely to be rural and less educated. National data from Egypt and …
Ethics, Ideology, and Reproductive Health Policy in the United States
The 1994 International Conference on Population and Development held in Cairo recognized the centrality of reproductive health to human rights and development. Progress on the Cairo agenda has slowed for numerous reasons, however. The United States, once an enthusiastic promoter of this agenda and still the world's leading reproductive health donor, has revised its reproductive health policies radically since the 2000 presidential election of Geo…
The Abortion Debate in Mexico
Over 500,000 clandestine abortions occur annually in Mexico, many under unfavourable health conditions. An uneasy silence about this situation has long prevailed. Since the 1970s, abortion has appeared periodically in public discourse and on the decision-making agenda, only for action to be repeatedly postponed. Mobilisation around the abortion issue grew slowly, but debate and controversy became nationwide as the country began to experience syst…
School-Based Sex Education in Western Nepal
The National Adolescent Health and Development Strategy (2000) of Nepal considers adolescents a key target group for information and services. The extent to which sex education is being provided in schools has received little attention, however. At higher secondary level, students are supposed to be taught basic sex education using a chapter in a textbook called Health, Population and Environment. Little is known about how or how well this materi…
The Acceptability of the Female and Male Condom
CONTEXT Although studies have assessed the acceptability of male and female condoms, comparative trial data are lacking. METHODS A sample of 108 women in stable relationships recruited from an urban, reproductive health clinic were randomly assigned to use 10 male or female condoms, followed by use of 10 of the other type. A nurse provided instruction in correct method use. Demographic information was collected in a baseline questionnaire; accept…

The Sociocultural Context of Condom Use Within Marriage in Rural Lebanon
Prevalence rates for condom use are low across the Middle East despite limited alternate contraceptive options and growing awareness of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and HIV/AIDS. Virtually no research exists to explain this situation and to guide policy development or effective interventions. An analysis of 25 focus‐group discussions with married women and men, interviews with service providers, and a survey of 589 women of childbearing a…

Nuptiality Transition and Marriage Squeeze in Lebanon
This paper examines nuptiality Tends and patterns in Lebanon using the 1996 Population and Housing Survey (PHS), a representative sample of 64,472 households that provides the largest demographic dataset for the country since the 1932 census. There are five objectives to this study. First, to analyze the proportions of single adults by age and sex, and trends and differentials in the mean age at first marriage (MAFM) for both sexes, at the nation…

Patterns, Determinants, and Implications of Intermarriage Among Arab Americans
This study examines Arab American intermarriage using 1990 U.S. Census data. The results indicate high rates of intermarriage consistent with an assimilation perspective. Over 80% of U.S.-born Arabs had non-Arab spouses, implying a diminishing ethnic identification. Logistic regressions show that for both sexes, those with part Arab ancestry, the U.S. born, those with strong English-language ability, and the highly educated were significantly mor…
Abortion Policy in Postcommunist Europe
This article traces the history of abortion policy in Poland and attempts to shed light on how and why a complete reversal in abortion policy took place and what this reversal will mean over time. The historical perspective begins with a consideration of the relatively liberal policy of 1932 which allowed physicians to abort pregnancies arising from criminal offenses or which threatened maternal health. This policy was further liberalized in 1956…
