Desempeño del Sistema de Salud de México
OBJECTIVE: To analyze variations in the performance of the Mexican health system (measured through life expectancy and premature mortality, as well as geographical inequality in these indicators) based on reforms to the General Health Law (LGS) carried out between 1984 and 2023.. METHOD: A retrospective longitudinal study using health outcome indicators (standardized rate of potentially avoidable premature mortality [PAPM] and life expectancy at …
Hospital accreditation in Mexico fails to improve the quality of healthcare
Healthcare quality in low- and middle-income countries poses a significant challenge, contributing to heightened mortality rates from treatable conditions. The accreditation of health facilities was part of the former health reform in Mexico, proposed as a mechanism to enhance healthcare quality. This study assesses the performance of hospital accreditation in Mexico, utilizing indicators of effectiveness, efficiency, and safety. Employing a long…
Mapping potentially avoidable premature mortality in Mexico
This study aimed to analyze the trends and disparities in preventable or treatable mortality rates among different age groups, sexes, and states in Mexico from 2000 to 2019. Using national data from 2000 to 2019, we examined potentially avoidable premature mortality (PAPM) rates, disaggregated into preventable and treatable deaths. Trends over time were visualized using the average annual percent change (AAPC) derived from joinpoint analysis. Sub…
Evolution of differences in clinical presentation across epidemic waves among patients with Covid-like-symptoms who received care at the Mexican Social Security Institute
Background: Timely monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 variants is crucial to effectively managing both prevention and treatment efforts. In this paper, we aim to describe demographic and clinical patterns of individuals with COVID-19-like symptoms during the first three epidemic waves in Mexico to identify changes in those patterns that may reflect differences determined by virus variants. Methods: We conducted a descriptive analysis of a large database co…

Socioeconomic and geographic inequities in vaccination among children 12 to 59 months in Mexico, 2012 to 2021
Objective. To document the evolution of socioeconomic and geographical inequalities in childhood vaccination in Mexico from 2012 to 2021. Methods. Repeated cross-sectional analysis using three rounds of National Health and Nutrition Surveys (2012, 2018, and 2021). Dichotomous variables were created to identify the proportion of children who received no dose of each vaccine included in the national immunization schedule (BCG; diphtheria, pertussis…

Socioeconomic inequalities in HIV knowledge, HIV testing, and condom use among adolescent and young women in Latin America and the Caribbean
Objective. To appraise the presence and magnitude of inter- and intra-country health inequalities related to HIV in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) among young females. Methods. We analyzed household surveys in twenty LAC countries, that included data from female adolescents and young women (ages 15-24) between 2008 and 2018, measuring inequality with the concentration index of 4 indicators: 1) whether individuals have heard of HIV or not, …
Advances and challenges on the path toward the SDGs
BACKGROUND: The sustainable development goals (SDGs) have generated momentum for global health, aligning efforts from governments and international organisations toward a set of goals that are expected to reflect improvements in life conditions across the globe. Mexico has huge social inequalities that can affect access to quality care and health outcomes. The objective of this study is to analyse inequalities among Mexico's 32 states on the heal…
Rape, transactional sex and related factors among migrants in transit through Mexico to the USA
Migrants in transit through Mexico to the USA are at risk of violence, including sexual violence, during the immigration process. This study sought to identify the socio-demographic factors, migration experiences and health conditions associated with the likelihood of sexual violence. A mixed methods study was conducted between 2012 and 2015. The quantitative phase of the work involved a non-random sample (n = 3539) of migrants who were the users…
Social inequality in sexual and reproductive health in Ecuador
Ecuador faces major challenges in terms of both levels and inequalities in SRH outcomes and access to services. These inequalities related to poverty highlight the persistence of social inequities in the country. These health inequalities affect the wellbeing of Ecuadorian women but they are amendable. There is a need for pro-equity interventions, with stronger efforts in areas (provinces) with larger socioeconomic vulnerabilities

Linking mass media campaigns to pictorial warning labels on cigarette packages
Consistent with other studies, adult smokers' exposure to new pictorial HWLs in Mexico was associated with psychosocial and behavioural responses related to quit behaviour. Exposure to the complementary media campaign was associated with independent additive effects on campaign-related knowledge, and it enhanced psychosocial responses to pictorial HWLs
Socioeconomic status, urbanicity and risk behaviors in Mexican youth
The results suggest that in this sample of adolescents from low-income areas in Mexico, risk behaviors are related to locality size (number of inhabitants). Furthermore, for condom use, this relation is moderated by SES. Such heterogeneity suggests the need for more detailed analyses of both the effects of urbanicity on behavior, and the responses--which are also heterogeneous--required to address this situation
Community-based prevention leads to an increase in condom use and a reduction in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among men who have sex with men (MSM) and female sex workers (FSW)
Important changes in behaviours related to an increase in prevention activities translated to reductions in STI sero-prevalence in AP, India. In contrast with non-FPP sites, the FPP sites experienced an intense community approach as part of the FPP intervention, and the general increase in condom use and its effect on STI sero-prevalence reflected the efficacy of these intense prevention activities focused on key populations in AP
Acceptability and reliability of an adolescent risk behavior questionnaire administered with audio and computer support
The use of ACASI systems in disadvantaged households to obtain data on adolescent risk behavior is not only feasible but may also improve data quality in the case of complex questionnaires, compared with FFIs, and should therefore be considered as an alternative survey method

Objective and subjective social class gradients for substance use among Mexican adolescents
Demography and sex work characteristics of female sex workers in India
BACKGROUND: The majority of sex work in India is clandestine due to unfavorable legal environment and discrimination against female sex workers (FSWs). We report data on who these women are and when they get involved with sex work that could assist in increasing the reach of HIV prevention activities for them. METHODS: Detailed documentation of demography and various aspects of sex work was done through confidential interviews of 6648 FSWs in 13 …
Correlates of condom use in a sample of MSM in Ecuador
Our data illustrate the urgent need for targeted HIV-prevention programs for MSM populations in Ecuador. MSM have the highest HIV prevalence in the country, and condom use is extremely low. It is imperative that prevention strategies be re-evaluated and re-prioritized to more effectively respond to the Ecuadorian epidemic
Risk behaviors of 15–21 year olds in Mexico lead to a high prevalence of sexually transmitted infections
The results presented in this study show a startlingly high prevalence of HSV-2 among sexually active Mexican adolescents in poor urban areas, suggesting that this group has participated to a great extent in risky sexual practices. The relationships between socioeconomic environment and adolescent risk behavior need to be better understood if we are to design preventive interventions that modify the determinants of risk behaviors
How much attention is needed towards men who sell sex to men for HIV prevention in India
These data indicate that men who sell sex to men are at much higher risk of acquiring and transmitting HIV than women who sell sex. Therefore, men who sell sex to men and their clients warrant substantial attention for comprehensive HIV prevention in India
High risk of HIV in non-brothel based female sex workers in India
About half the FSWs do not use condom consistently with their clients in this Indian state putting them at high risk of HIV infection. Non-brothel-based FSWs, who form the majority of sex workers in India, were at a significantly higher risk of HIV infection as compared with brothel-based FSWs. With their high vulnerability, the success of expansion of HIV prevention efforts will depend on achieving and sustaining an environment that enables HIV …
