Instructional and Developmental Communication Theory and Research in the 1990s
In examining the state of the art in instructional and developmental communication, the authors define the scope of the Instructional and Developmental Communication Division of the International Communication Association. They then present an overview of the primary theories that have directed research in instructional communication since 1990 and identify the major areas of research, discussing representative studies within each area. Finally, …
When norms are violated
Presents a study which examined the receivers' symbolic cognitive process in response to particular types of norm violations. Definition of several violation theories; How imagined interactions affect the symbolic information processing of receivers; Analysis of the reliance of students on imagined or real interactions to norm violating teachers
Students' Affective Evaluations of the Professor and Course
This study investigated the relationships among college professors' sex, students' sex, teacher sex-role egalitarianism, and students' affective learning. Reasoning that perceptions of sexism in the classroom may influence students' attitudes toward both the teacher and the course/subject matter, two hypotheses and one research question were advanced. Tests of these relationships relied on college student (N = 224) responses to survey measures of…
Situational and Individual Determinants of Teachers' Reported Use of Behavior Alteration Techniques
Tying together principles applicable to compliance-gaining from both interpersonal and instructional communication theory and research, this investigation focused on situational and individual difference determinants of teachers’ strategy selection in the classroom. Specifically, this study required teachers to focus on student misbehavior scenarios that reflected the situational determinants of misbehavior type (active/passive) and intensity (mo…

Influence of Recollections of Teachers' and Peers' Evaluations on Students' Self-Appraisals
According to reflective appraisal theory, a person's self-statements are largely determined by what that person thinks significant others think about him. In the present study, teachers and peers were identified as significant others and the relationship between self-appraisal and recollections of teacher and peer appraisals was examined. Self-appraisals of subjects appeared to be partially a function of recollected teachers' appraisal; however, …
Self-Appraisal as a Function of Recollected Parental Appraisal
Reflective appraisal theory is based on the assumption that a person's view of self is largely determined by what that person thinks significant others think about him. Since parents have been identified as important significant others, the relationship between self-appraisal and recollections of parental appraisals was examined. Self-appraisals appeared to be at least partially a function of recollected parental appraisals
Factor Analysis of the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule and the Personal Report of Communication Apprehension-24
Prior work indicates items for the Rathus Assertiveness Schedule and the Personal Report of Communication Apprehension share one common factor, apprehension about interpersonal encounters. Employing a revised measure of apprehension, factor analysis of responses of 160 male and 144 female undergraduates to these two scales yielded five factors: apprehension about communicating in groups and meetings, apprehension in interpersonal contexts, appreh…
Role Enactment as a Socially Relevant Explanation of Self-Persuasion
This paper reports four tests of Berger's role enactment model of persuasion. The model is addressed to generalizing counter attitudinal communication to social situations when persons find themselves encoding belief-discrepant messages. This encoding takes the form of role enactments which lead to attitude change. Crucial to predicting from the model are variables identifying the communicator's self-perceived role enactment competence (SPREC), p…

Antecedents of Change in Attitudes of Males and Females
To isolate personality variables descriptive of attitudinal changes for males and females, subjects (82 males, 74 females) completed a variety of nonprojective personality tests, received a counterattitudinal message, and indicated pre- and posttest attitudes toward the message topic. The results of a stepwise multiple discriminant analysis indicated differences which are descriptive of males and females exhibiting different amounts of attitudina…
