  • A new flood chronology for KwaZulu-Natal (1836–2022)

Stefan Grab, S W Grab et al.•ARTICLE•South African Geographical Journal•2024

In April 2022, flooding and associated geohazards caused major loss of life and extensive damage in the greater Durban region and large areas of the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) coastal zone. Heavy rainfall that triggered the flooding and mass movement events was reported in national and international media as having ‘smashed weather records’. However, no systematic and up-to-date flood record exists for KZN to allow the April 2022 floods to be viewed wit…

  • Perceived impacts of climate change on rural poultry production

Njongenhle M B Nyoni, Stefan Grab et al.•ARTICLE•Climate and Development•2022

Rural farming households in developing countries frequently contend with multiple challenges, including a lack of resources, food insecurity, and poverty. Climate change threatens to compound existing challenges, particularly in such rural subsistence economies with limited adaptive capacity. We aim to establish farmers' perspectives on likely impacts of climate change on their rural poultry production in northern South Africa. A baseline questio…

  • Whose knowledge matters in climate change adaptation? Perceived and measured rainfall trends during the last half century in south‐western Tanzania

    Open Access•Noah M Pauline, Stefan Grab•ARTICLE•Singapore Journal of Tropical…•2018

Parts of eastern Africa have experienced substantial climatic variability and extremes during the last few decades. Here we explore the extent to which local place‐based knowledge is used and is relevant to understanding and appropriately responding to place‐based climate variability and change (specifically rainfall) in an area of considerable rainfall variability in south‐western Tanzania. Primary data were collected using focus group discussio…

  • Projected changes in tropical cyclones over the South West Indian Ocean under different extents of global warming

Open Access•Mavhungu S Muthige, Johan Malherbe et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

The Paris Agreement achieved in December 2015 established that the signatory countries should pursue to hold the increase in global average temperature to below 2 °C relative to the preindustrial period and to strive to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 °C below the preindustrial period. The potential changes in tropical cyclones over the basin making landfall over southern Africa under the key global temperature goals have not been thoroughl…

  • Late-Holocene climate and vegetation dynamics in eastern Lesotho highlands

    Open Access•Elin Norström, Caroline Bringensparr et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2018•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 18

The eastern Lesotho highlands are of considerable hydrological importance to southern Africa as a so-called ‘water tower’ for the surrounding region. Here, we contribute proxy-data inferring climate and vegetation changes over the past 1600 years, assessing in parallel inorganic and organic chemical analyses on a sediment core from Ladybird wetland, eastern Lesotho. Several proxies were used to determine changes in local vegetation dynamics, prod…

  • Quaternary Environmental Change in Southern Africa

    Open Access•Stefan Grab, S McCourt et al.•BOOK•Quaternary Environmental Change…•2016

Ongoing climate change necessitates advances in our understanding of the interrelationships between climate, landscape-shaping processes and human activity over long time periods, especially in areas that are already climatically stressed. This volume presents new ideas on macroscale landscape evolution; mountain, fluvial and aeolian processes; and environments in southern Africa, a key region in the story of human evolution during the last two m…

  • Holocene climatic variability indicated by a multi-proxy record from southern Africa’s highest wetland

    Open Access•Jennifer M Fitchett, Anson W Mackay et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 25

The eastern Lesotho Highlands experience climate patterns distinct from those of surrounding lower altitude regions, representing a niche environment with a unique biodiversity, leading to well-adapted but restricted vegetation. This study explores changes in the Holocene composition of diatoms and pollen at southern Africa’s highest altitude wetland (Mafadi: 3390 m a.s.l.). The palaeoenvironmental record for Mafadi Wetland indicates fluctuations…

  • Assessment of Social Vulnerability to Natural Hazards in the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho

Open Access•Moipone Letsie, Moipone M Letsie et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2015

Lesotho's landlocked mountainous setting with thin regolith cover and poor economic situation make it vulnerable to hazardous events associated with climate such as drought, floods, strong winds, heavy snowfall, and severe frost. To date, no quantitatively based vulnerability assessment has been undertaken in this heavily populated, developing region in southern Africa. The primary aim of this study was to assess social vulnerability of communiti…

  • Temperature variability over Africa during the last 2000 years

    Open Access•Sharon E Nicholson, D J Nash et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 6

A growing number of proxy, historical and instrumental data sets are now available from continental Africa through which past variations in temperature can be assessed. This paper, co-authored by members of the PAGES Africa2k Working Group, synthesises published material to produce a record of temperature variability for Africa as a whole spanning the last 2000 years. The paper focuses on temperature variability during the ‘Medieval Climate Anoma…

  • Regional Contrasts in Mountain Tourism Development in the Drakensberg, South Africa

Open Access•Jonathan Linde, Stefan Grab•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2008

The Drakensberg is the highest mountain range in southern Africa and is considered a valuable natural and economic resource; it is also a primary tourist destination in the region. The present article compares recent tourism development and management in the well-established Royal Natal National Park (RNNP) and the adjoining Mnweni Valley, which is a developing center and former apartheid homeland. Trends in tourist characteristics, governance, a…

  • Non-Sorted Patterned Ground in the High Drakensberg, Southern Africa

    Stefan Grab•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1998

This paper presents empirical data on non-sorted patterned ground in the high Drakensberg. Some morphological and sedimentary characteristics for thufur and nonsorted steps are provided. The study also examines process data on ground heave activity at a thufur site. Contemporary cryogenic activity at the non-sorted steps is indicative that the patterns are at least seasonally active. Soil heave measurements at the Mashai Valley thufur site suppor…
