The Experiences of People With Dementia and Their Informal Carers of Long‐Term Condition Reviews in Primary Care
Multimorbidity (having more than one long‐term condition) is common for people with dementia and leads to increased healthcare needs and poorer outcomes for those individuals and also their informal carers. In the United Kingdom, part of the management of comorbidities occurs through annual long‐term condition reviews in primary care. To date, there has been little research on the experiences of people with dementia and their informal carers with…
The Experiences of Social Connection and Isolation in Adults With Acquired Brain Injury
Effects of the Covid-19 associated United Kingdom lockdown on physical activity in older adults at high risk of cardiovascular disease
Introduction Physical inactivity and sedentary behaviour are linked to increased risk of cardiovascular disease, infections and dementia, as well as placing a significant economic burden on healthcare systems. The implementation of COVID-19 pandemic lockdown measures aimed at reducing virus transmission posed challenges to the opportunity to be physically active. This study investigates how the first UK COVID-19 lockdown affected objectively meas…

Subtle or Covert Abuse Within Intimate Partner Relationships
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global health problem enacted with varying degrees of severity, leading to mental and physical damage. Consequently, understanding about the behaviors and impacts of subtle abuse is limited, and there is a potential inability by therapists to recognize it in their clients. This scoping review sought to identify and synthesize the literature around subtle or covert abuse (SCA) in intimate adult relationships to…
Lest we forget. Illuminating lived experience of the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown
The COVID-19 pandemic and associated 'lockdowns' profoundly impacted people's lives in 2020-2021 and beyond. This study sought to understand unique person-centred insights into health and wellbeing during the restrictive measures in the United Kingdom and to enable us to remember and give testimony to these lived experiences. Using photo-methods, participants from a larger cohort study which tracked people's behaviours during the pandemic were in…
Council tenancies and hoarding behaviours
Hoarding behaviours are highly stigmatised and often hidden. People with problematic hoarding behaviours have a higher rate of mental health and other healthcare and social services utilisation. Hoarding is a community health problem, one factor being housing insecurity. Hoarding behaviours represent significant burden to housing providers, impact the community and dealing with it involves multiple community agencies. This study with a city counc…
Cancer risk in socially marginalised women
Women in this study were at high risk of cancer, but it would be better to understand these risk factors as markers of distress and duress. Without appreciating the wider determinants of health and systemic disadvantage of marginalised groups, and addressing these with a structural rather than an individual response, we risk increasing cancer inequities by failing those who are in the greatest need
Missed opportunities in the evaluation of public health interventions
Our study of the evaluations demonstrated a missed opportunity to confidently establish what worked and what did not work in walking programmes with particular populations. This limited the potential for evidence synthesis and to highlight innovative practice warranting further investigation. Our findings suggest a mandate for evaluability assessment. Used at the planning stage this may have ensured the development of realistic objectives and cru…
Extreme rituals in a BDSM context
Participation in extreme rituals (e.g., fire-walking, body-piercing) has been documented throughout history. Motivations for such physically intense activities include religious devotion, sensation-seeking and social bonding. The present study aims to explore an extreme ritual within the context of bondage/discipline, dominance/submission and sadism/masochism (BDSM): the 'Dance of Souls', a 160-person ritual involving temporary piercings with wei…
Walking groups in socioeconomically deprived communities
Walking groups can benefit health but uptake is more likely amongst those who are socially well-situated and need them least. This study worked with a new walking group in a community in England with poor health and socio-economic indicators to understand non-participation and barriers to involvement. It used a qualitative approach. Participant generated photographs captured the physical and social environments in which they walked and these were…
Epidemiology of Substance-Exposed Pregnancies at One Great Lakes Hospital
Data from this project can be used in prevention efforts, including preconception care for women at risk for substance use and mental health issues
Promoting physical activity interventions in communities with poor health and socio-economic profiles
Walking groups have known health benefits but may not operate in communities with the greatest health needs, leading to the potential for increasing health inequity. This study examined the process of implementing a new volunteer led walking group scheme in a deprived community in England with poor physical activity, health and socio-economic indicators. Documentary evidence and semi-structured interviews with stakeholders and volunteer walk lead…
The Division of Child Care, Sexual Intimacy, and Relationship Quality in Couples
Increasingly, both mothers and fathers are expected to play an equal role in child rearing. Nonetheless, we know little about how child care arrangements affect couples' sexual intimacy and relationship quality. Research has focused on the effect of the division of paid labor and housework on couples' relationships, finding that egalitarianism is problematic for sexual intimacy, relationship quality, and relationship stability. These findings, ho…
The Gendered Division of Housework and Couples' Sexual Relationships
Although contemporary couples increasingly express preferences for egalitarian unions, previous research has suggested that sexual intimacy decreases when routine housework is shared. Yet this research was conducted on data that are decades old. To update this work, the authors compared data from the 2006 Marital and Relationship Survey (MARS) and Wave 2 of the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH2), collected in 1992-1994. The result…
Is there evidence that walking groups have health benefits? A systematic review and meta-analysis
A spatial equity analysis of a public health intervention
Without targeting those areas with greater health and socio-economic need, there is a concern that walking groups may not be set up in areas that need them most. There is therefore a potential that this intervention could, albeit in a small way, widen inequity between local authorities. However small-scale and well-intentioned, interventions need to be evaluated for their potential impact on inequity
Empower – empowering parents to prevent obesity at weaning – exploratory research

Gender, Class, and Space
The social area analyses and factorial ecologies of the 1950s and 1960s have constrained the way in which scholars conceptualize urban space; in particular, one can trace contemporary arguments regarding the social reproduction of class to the notion of homogeneous neighborhoods that emerges from social area analyses and factorial ecology. It is argued that the growth in female labor-force participation, the fact of occupational sex segregation, …
Accessibility and Intraurban Travel
This paper contains an examination of the fundamental assumption underlying the use of accessibility indicators: that an individual's travel behavior is related to his or her location vis-à-vis the distribution of potential activity sites. First, the conceptual and measurement issues surrounding accessibility and its relationship to travel are reviewed; then, an access measure for individuals is formulated. Using data from the Uppsala (Sweden) Ho…
