Conceptualizing Intersectional Harm in Mathematics Classrooms
This study reports high school Black girls' experiences in mathematics classrooms. Forty-eight Black girls participated in 12 focus groups. Findings showed that the girls experienced uncaring teachers, uninteresting curriculum, and unsupportive learning environments. We used a sociopolitical analytic approach to make sense of their narratives and theorized how these experiences could relate to discourses of intersectional harm. We argue that disc…
Intersectionality Pedagogy
Intersectionality is a perspective that brings visibility to how Black women are relegated to the margins of the university curriculum, if included at all. With this article, we extend our research on intersectionality methodology to explore intersectionality pedagogy (IP) and the significance of centering Black women's experiences in teaching and learning processes as one form of me-search. IP serves as the framing to build on the legacy of bell…
A Call to Action
Black fathers and daughters are the least explored relationship within parent-child and STEM research. This article serves as an examination of the literature around their relationships and STEM learning and as a call to action. Intersectionality, as an analytic lens, examines Black fathers’ familial and STEM relationships over time and Black women’s and girls’ (BWG’s) interest and competence in STEM, as well as how systemic factors of gendered r…
Small Group Learning Communities as a Prototype for Intersectional Black Feminist Praxis in Higher Education
Through the creation and analysis of Small Group Learning Communities (SGLC) at a predominantly White university in the U.S. South, this study investigated how SGLCs operationalize intersectional Black feminist praxis via dialogue, liberation, and ethic of caring. The racialized and gendered organizational dynamics that govern institutions of higher education make it an ideal site for such an intervention. Through an instrumental case study of 13…
Black Girls in Mathematics
Building upon research utilizing Martin’s Mathematical Socialization and Identity Framework, we examine factors related to community and family involvement to advance the current discourse that informs policies. Data from the High School Longitudinal Study (HSLS:09) public-use file provided a sample of 1,029 Black girls for our analyses. We developed a theoretically-sound inclusive measure, as defined by Black girls, titled the Community and Fami…
Black Feminist Mathematics Pedagogies (BlackFMP)
This essay introduces Nicole Joseph’s Black Feminist Mathematics Pedagogies (BlackFMP), a theoretical and pedagogical model grounded in Black feminism and Black girlhood. BlackFMP is a framework in service of the disruption of gendered antiblackness found in the US mathematics education system. For far too long, mathematics curriculum and pedagogies have mainly served middle-class White students leaving Black girls invisible and vulnerable. Becau…
The Politics of Publishing
What does it mean to expand the epistemological terrain in education research to improve educational equity? This feature article attends to this question by opening a national conversation with education researchers who take up intersectionality in their study of Black women in higher education, specifically, the application of Kimberlé Crenshaw’s intersectionality dimensions—structural, political, and representational. We surveyed the authors o…
The Role of Socialization in Shaping Black Girls’ Mathematics Identity
Background/Context Previous literature has focused on mathematics socialization as it relates to the construction of mathematics identity, yet much of that research has been qualitative and lacking the theorization of high school Black girls. This study presents a longitudinal analysis of the relationships between socialization factors and mathematics identity among high school Black girls. Purpose/Objective/Research Question/Focus of Study Mappi…
Toward an Understanding of Intersectionality Methodology
Kimberlé Crenshaw’s scholarship on Black women has been the springboard for numerous education studies in which researchers use intersectionality as a theoretical framework; however, few have considered the possibilities of intersectionality as a methodological tool. In this literature synthesis, the authors (a) examined studies about Black women in higher education that had been published in the past 30 years to understand how those scholars app…
Intersectionality in HCI
In this forum we explore different perspectives for how to apply intersectionality as a critical framework for design across multiple contexts. --- Yolanda A. Rankin and Jakita O. Thomas, Editors
Black Girls and School Discipline
Using Critical Race Theory and Critical Race Feminism as guiding conceptual frameworks, this mixed-methods empirical study examines Black girls’ exclusionary discipline outcomes. First, we examined disciplinary data from a large urban school district to assess racial group differences in office referral reasons and disparities for Black girls in out-of-school suspensions, law enforcement referrals, and expulsions. Next, we used a multivariate ana…
Interrogating Whiteness and Relinquishing Power
Out of the Classroom and Into the City
This article explores the researcher’s use of field trips as an experiential learning tool in a social studies methods course as a pilot study. The researchers analyzed course evaluations and student reflection papers using document analysis to determine (a) the positive and negative aspects of utilizing field trips during the course, and (b) the ways the field trips advanced or limited pre-service teachers’ learning. The findings indicate that s…
