The land left behind
This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the multifaceted impacts of transnational migration in Nepal, drawing on findings from 42 systematically selected research articles. Ethnomedicinal plants used for immediate care in Nepal
BACKGROUND: Immediate Care (IC) refers to the basic and urgent treatment given to the patient to reduce the health risks and seriousness. Due to the large number of rural populations and limited access to modern health care in Nepal, herbal medicines are extensively used for immediate care and long-term treatments. The present review aims to systematically document and analyze the medicinal plants used by indigenous communities as IC in Nepal. ME…
Everyone is leaving, so am I”
Migration in some societies transcends mere economic considerations, becoming a culturally ingrained practice. Through an ethnographic study in Nepal, this research explores how migration aspirations are reproduced and transmitted across generations and social networks, creating a self-sustaining cycle, and forming a ‘culture of migration’. The study discusses, how the economic necessity, together with a pervasive Fear of Missing Out (FOMO), soci…
Seeking greener pastures
This article frames rahar (desire) and badhyata (compulsion) as interdependent cultural logics that shape migration imaginaries in Nepali society. Drawing on ethnographic interviews with aspiring labor migrants and international students, the study explores how these affective frameworks operate dialectically, simultaneously reflecting subjective emotional experiences while recursively structuring the culture of migration. The analysis contends t…
Geographical imaginations and migration aspirations
From the Lahureys to the Russia-Ukraine War
This article explores the historical evolution and persistence of Nepal’s deeply rooted culture of migration, framing transnational migration as a central social institution. Adopting a multi-scalar perspective, the article examines how migration practices have adapted to shifting political, economic, and global conditions. Through conjunctural analysis, it traces the trajectory from colonial-era military enlistment and seasonal labour migration …
Empowering Absence? Assessing the Impact of Transnational Male Out-Migration on Left behind Wives
Experiences of left-behind family members of transnational migrant workers have been in the shadow of academic discourse on migration. To contribute to the slowly growing body of literature, this study explores the impact of male out-migration on left-behind wives. The study proposes and applies a novel framework to estimate Women Empowerment Index (WEI) for comparing the empowerment level across households with and without men in transnational l…
Perception and Use of Primary Healthcare Services Among People With Cardiometabolic Diseases in Two Resource-Limited Areas in Nepal
Nepal is a country in south Asia with a high burden of cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs). Strengthening primary healthcare (PHC) is a key strategy to mitigate this increasing burden and achieve universal health coverage. While previous studies in Nepal have assessed PHC use among the elderly, none have specifically explored PHC use among people with CMDs. Therefore, this mixed-methods study aimed to assess the use and perception of PHC services in …

Psychosocial and Mental Health Problems of Older People in Postearthquake Nepal
The findings suggest that earthquake had negative impact on older people's psychosocial well-being; however, little support or treatment options have been made available to these individuals. The tailor-made community-based psychosocial and mental health programs for older people are needed
Designing mental health interventions informed by child development and human biology theory
The anthropological study of human biology, health, and child development provides a model with potential to address the gap in population‐wide mental health interventions. Four key concepts from human biology can inform public mental health interventions: life history theory and tradeoffs, redundancy and plurality of pathways, cascades and multiplier effects in biological systems, and proximate feedback systems. A public mental health interventi…
Social Ecology of Child Soldiers
This study employed a social ecology framework to evaluate psychosocial well-being in a cross-sectional sample of 142 former child soldiers in Nepal. Outcome measures included the Depression Self Rating Scale (DSRS), Child Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Scale (CPSS), and locally developed measures of functional impairment and reintegration. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to examine the contribution of factors at multiple levels. At …
