  • A time-series of evolving glacial geomorphology for Esjufjallajökull (Breiðamerkurjökull), southeast Iceland

Open Access•Amy Lally, Alastair Ruffell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2025

This paper presents four glacial geomorphology maps depicting glacier retreat and landscape evolution between September 2021 and May 2023 at Esjufjallajökull, the central flow unit of Breiðamerkurjökull, southeast Iceland. The foreland, which deglaciated between 2010 and 2023, was mapped from repeat uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) survey data. A total of 16 landform types were identified, and their spatial distribution and morphological evolution p…

  • The (mis)conception of average Quaternary conditions

    Open Access•Matteo Spagnolo, Brice R Rea et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2022

The concept of Quaternary average conditions has gained popularity over the past few decades, especially with studies of long-term landscape evolution. In this paper, we critically assess this concept by analyzing the marine isotope record (LR04 δ 18 O stack) relative to the Quaternary. This shows that the frequency and amplitude of climate glacial-interglacial cycles are not constant throughout the Quaternary, with a clear change during the Midd…

  • Pushing the Limits

    J Edward Schofield, Danni M Pearce et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2019•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 19

This paper presents two high-resolution pollen records dating to ∼AD 1000–1400 that reveal the impacts of Norse colonists on vegetation and landscape around a remote farmstead in the Western Settlement of Greenland. The study is centred upon a ‘centralised farm’ (ruin group V53d) in Austmannadalen, near the margin of the Greenland Ice Sheet (64°13′N, 49°49′W). The climate is low arctic and considered marginal in terms of its suitability for the t…

  • The glacial geomorphology of upper Godthåbsfjord (Nuup Kangerlua) in southwest Greenland

Open Access•Danni M Pearce, Douglas Mair et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2018

The Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) is known to have experienced widespread retreat over the last century. Information on outlet glacier dynamics, prior to this, are limited due to both a lack of observations and a paucity of mapped or mappable deglacial evidence which restricts our understanding of centennial to millennial timescale dynamics of the GrIS. Here we present glacial geomorphological mapping, for upper Godthåbsfjord, covering 5800 km2 at a…

  • Glacial geomorphology of the Tweedsmuir Hills, Central Southern Uplands, Scotland

Open Access•Danni M Pearce, Danni Pearce et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2014

The Quaternary glacial history of the Tweedsmuir Hills, Central Southern Uplands, Scotland, has received little attention since the 1980s, with earlier studies focussing on single lines of geomorphic evidence in isolated valleys. This study presents the first systematic glacial geomorphological assessment of the region, covering approximately 300 km2 with the map designed to be presented at A0. Mapping from remotely sensed imagery and field inves…

  • Surging glacier landsystem of Tungnaárjökull, Iceland

    Open Access•David J A Evans, David R Twigg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2009

Please click here to download the map associated with this article. A1:30,000 scale map of the snout and proglacial landscape of the surging Icelandic glacier Tungnaárjökull, based upon aerial photography from 1995, immediately after a surge, allows an assessment of the spatial variability in landform-sediment imprints of catastrophic glacier advance across upland bedrock ridges. The ice-margin parallel alignment of the bedrock ridges locally str…

  • Surficial geology and geomorphology of the Brúarjökull surging glacier landsystem

    Open Access•D J A Evans, D R Twigg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2007

Please click here to download the map associated with this article. A 1:30,000 scale map poster of the snout and proglacial landscape of the surging Icelandic glacier Bruarjokull, provides a spatial and temporal assessment of the geomorphic impacts of surging in glaciated terrains. Based upon aerial photography from 1998, 1999 and 2000, the map identifies the major landforms that are regarded as diagnostic of glacier surging when viewed in a land…

  • Weathering, Blockfields, and Fracture Systems and the Implications for Long-Term Landscape Formation

    W Brian Whalley, Brice R Rea et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Geography•2004

(2004). Weathering, Blockfields, and Fracture Systems and the Implications for Long-Term Landscape Formation: Some Evidence from Lyngen and Øksfordjøkelen Areas in North Norway. Polar Geography: Vol. 28, No. 2, pp. 93-119

  • Two Examples of the Use of 'Electronic Posters

    W Brian Whalley, Brice R Rea•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•1998•Referencias: 4

This paper outlines the implementation, production and assessment of electronic posters in two undergraduate classes. In one case the material was prepared in PowerPoint, the other as a World Wide Web presentation using HTML. The advantages of each are described, together with the marking schemes and some comments about implementation. Students worked in small groups but were given individual marks. Overall, the use of electronic media was liked …
