Exploring Transgender and Gender Diverse Young Adult Tobacco Use
Aside from prevalence estimates and comparisons to heterosexual and presumed cisgender (i.e., not transgender) samples, little is known about transgender and gender diverse (TGD) young adult tobacco use. This study explored reasons and contexts TGD young adults used a variety of tobacco products through 25 one-on-one semi-structured qualitative interviews in 2018. Thematic analysis yielded four themes: (1) smoking in response to anxiety, depressi…
The Future of Substance Abuse Now
Background: Substances that can be vaped include nicotine, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and a range of synthetic drugs called new psychoactive substances (NPS). Due to the rising popularity of vaping among adolescents, it is crucial to understand the relationships between vaping and illicit drug use. Objectives: This paper examined the prevalence and trends of using vaping devices, marijuana vaping, marijuana products, synthetic cannabinoids and m…
Multiple tobacco product use among cigarette smokers
There was a gradient relationship between menthol cigarette smoking and number of tobacco products used among young adult cigarette smokers. Findings provide for greater regulatory and programmatic efforts to reduce the use of menthol cigarettes
The Recalled Age of Initiation of Multiple Tobacco Products among 26–34 Year Olds
Due to the ever-changing tobacco marketplace, understanding when contemporary adults aged 26-34 years recall initiating TP use is important and will inform prevention researchers
A Simulation of the potential impact of restricting tobacco retail outlets around middle and high schools on tobacco advertisements
Students can be exposed to a great deal of tobacco advertising in TROs around their schools. The implementation of a 1000 ft ban of TROs, or at minimum a ban on tobacco advertising outside and within these outlets, is one way to prevent or reduce the use of tobacco among adolescents
Exposure to tobacco marketing in bars predicts subsequent use of multiple tobacco products among non-tobacco-using college students
Tobacco companies claim that marketing is targeted to those who already use the product, not to non-users. However, the current study indicates tobacco marketing in bars and nightclubs may encourage use among non-users and has no influence on current users
Trajectories of Tobacco and Nicotine Use Across Young Adulthood, Texas, 2014–2017
Objectives. To examine intraindividual change in polytobacco and individual tobacco and nicotine product use across young adulthood. Method. Participants were 2711 students from 24 Texas colleges participating in a 6-wave online study, with 6 months between each wave. Participants were aged 18 to 25 years at baseline in fall 2014 or spring 2015 and aged 20 to 28 years at wave 6. We used growth curve modeling for an accelerated longitudinal design…
Adolescent Tobacco Uptake and Other Substance Use
Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify patterns of tobacco uptake and other substance use, from early to late adolescence. Methods: We used weighted latent class analysis, conducted separately for 7 th , 9 th , and 11 th graders, to assess patterns of susceptibility, ever and current use of combustible tobacco and e-cigarettes, and other substance use (ie, current alcohol, binge drinking, and marijuana). Data were from Wave 3 of the…
Developing mobile phone text messages for tobacco risk communication among college students
Overall, participants found the messages to be interesting and appropriate. A gap in awareness of the risks of using new tobacco products was revealed. Feedback on the prototype messages was incorporated into message revisions. These findings provided preliminary confirmation that the forthcoming messaging program will be appealing to young adults
E-cigarette Use and Cigarette Smoking Cessation among Texas College Students
Use of e-cigarettes for cigarette smoking cessation may reduce cigarette smoking rates in young adult college students. Additional research is needed examining e-cigarettes as a complement to evidence-based cessation resources that are associated with cigarette smoking cessation among young adults
Multiple Risk Behaviors Among African American and Hispanic Boys
This study examined multiple risk behaviors (violence, delinquency, and substance use) among 240 African American and 262 Hispanic preadolescent boys from urban schools in the Midwest United States. Latent transition analysis allowed patterns of multivariate risk to emerge uniquely within and across these ethnic groups, highlighting patterns for subgroups that are overlooked by common aggregate statistics. Results revealed four risk classes for e…
Is the Consumption of Energy Drinks Associated With Academic Achievement Among College Students
E-cigarette Dual Users, Exclusive Users and Perceptions of Tobacco Products
Findings highlight dual users' higher prevalence of use of most other tobacco products, their lower harm perceptions of most tobacco products compared to e-cigarette-only users, and their higher perceived peer use of cigarettes compared to exclusive users
Transitions in Smoking Behavior During Emerging Adulthood
Objectives. We studied the effect of home smoking bans on transitions in smoking behavior during emerging adulthood. Methods. We used latent transition analysis to examine movement between stages of smoking from late adolescence (ages 16–18 years) to young adulthood (ages 18–20 years) and the effect of a home smoking ban on these transitions. We used data from the Minnesota Adolescent Community Cohort study collected in 2004 to 2006. Results. Ove…
Cross-Gender Social Normative Effects for Violence in Middle School
The cost-effectiveness of a school-based smoking prevention program in India
Intervention programs aimed at preventing tobacco use among youth have been shown to be effective in curbing tobacco use onset and progression. However, the effects of even very successful tobacco prevention programs may not always impress policy-makers and lay audiences. Economic analysis potentially strengthens the case. In this paper, we evaluate the cost-effectiveness of a youth tobacco use prevention program which has been translated and imp…
Association of breakfast intake with obesity, dietary and physical activity behavior among urban school-aged adolescents in Delhi, India
Daily breakfast consumption is associated with less overweight and obesity and with healthier dietary- and physical activity-related behaviors among urban Indian students. Although prospective studies should confirm the present results, intervention programs to prevent or treat childhood obesity in India should consider emphasizing regular breakfast consumption
Classroom Norms and Individual Smoking Behavior in Middle School
Interventions can target middle school classes and schools broadly, without making the identification of friendship networks a concern
Influence of Grade-Level Drinking Norms on Individual Drinking Behavior
Interventions can target extreme drinkers as the influential persons in middle-school grades

Alcohol advertising is more prevalent around schools with 20% or more Hispanic students. Policies should be considered to reduce the amount of alcohol advertising around schools
The Impact of Project Northland on Selected MMPI-A Problem Behavior Scales
Longitudinal tracking of adolescent smoking, physical activity, and food choice behaviors
OBJECTIVES. A major assumption underlying youth health promotion has been that physiological risk factors track from childhood into adulthood. However, few studies have systematically examined how behaviors change during adolescence. This paper describes longitudinal tracking of adolescent health behaviors in two Minnesota Heart Health Program communities. METHODS. Beginning in sixth grade (1983), seven annual waves of behavioral measurements wer…
