From the mid-19th century onwards, the acceleration of capitalist expansion in indigenous South America was driven by a series of extractive endeavors such as the rubber industry in the Bolivian Amazon, the dairy, meat and tannin industries in the Chaco, or the sugar and cotton industries in northern Argentina. These industrial enterprises advanced on indigenous territories that until then had been considered 'frontiers', 'deserts' or 'empty spac…

Open Access•Bonifacio, Valentina Bonifacio et al.•ARTICLE•Revista de Antropologia•2016

The article is a reflection on the definition of the political arena in the Paraguayan context and beyond. The first is the case of the maskoy communities of Alto Paraguay, where the absence of “developmental” forms of indigenous organi…

  • Building up the collective

    Open Access•Bonifacio, Valentina Bonifacio•ARTICLE•Social Anthropology•2013

In this article I aim at questioning the modalities through which international cooperation is promoting the creation of indigenous organisations in Paraguay by reinforcing specific notions of what is political and what is not, and in particular by abiding by the nature‐culture divide. In particular, I argue that it ends up ignoring a variety of indigenous political practices by labelling them as ‘religious’ or not recognising them at all
