Self-reported and Point-of-Care Biomarkers of Substance Use Measures Among Older Adults with HIV from Low- and Middle-Income Countries
Measuring alcohol and other drug (AOD) use remains challenging in HIV care in low- and middle-income countries, where self-report and point-of-care (POC) urine biomarkers capture different time windows. Among 2,059 people with HIV aged 40 years or older across eight IeDEA clinics (2020 to 2022), we examined what self-reported AOD use (AUDIT, ASSIST) and POC urine tests (uEtG for alcohol; 5-panel drug screen) each capture. Self-report identified m…
Correlates of Alcohol Use and Hazardous Alcohol Consumption Among Adults Living with HIV in Tanzania
Stakeholders’ perspectives on the management and prevention of non-communicable diseases in rural Tanzania
Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), such as hypertension, diabetes, sickle cell disease, and rheumatic heart disease, pose significant health burdens in low-income countries, not the least rural Tanzania, exacerbated by limited healthcare infrastructure, human and financial resources. This paper reports the perspectives of key stakeholders on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges (SWOC) in managing and preventing non-communicable…
Multiple cardiovascular risk factor care in 55 low- and middle-income countries
The prevalence of multiple age-related cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors is high among individuals living in low- and middle-income countries. We described receipt of healthcare services for and management of hypertension and diabetes among individuals living with these conditions using individual-level data from 55 nationally representative population-based surveys (2009–2019) with measured blood pressure (BP) and diabetes biomarker. We …
The prevalence of cardiovascular disease risk factors among adults living in extreme poverty
Health service readiness to provide care for HIV and cardiovascular disease risk factors in low- and middle-income countries
Cardiovascular disease risk factors (CVDRF), in particular diabetes and hypertension, are chronic conditions which carry a substantial disease burden in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. Unlike HIV, they were neglected in the Millenium Development Goals along with the health services required to manage them. To inform the level of health service readiness that could be achieved with increased attention, we compared readiness for CVDRF with that f…

Findings from Community-Based Screenings for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in at Risk Communities in Cape Town, South Africa
Completed and ongoing implementation activities globally advocate for community-based approaches to improve strategies for type 2 diabetes prevention. However, little is known about such strategies in the African region where there are higher relative increases in diabetes prevalence. We reported findings from the first 8-month pilot phase of the South African diabetes prevention program. The study was conducted across eight townships (four black…
The state of hypertension care in 44 low-income and middle-income countries
Knowledge and perception on type2 diabetes and hypertension among HIV clients utilizing care and treatment services
Considerable number of respondents had low level of knowledge (41.1%) regarding T2DM/HTN specifically on the risk factors, prevention strategies and their associated complications and negative perception (43.7%) towards healthy practices for mitigating risk behaviors of the diseases. There is need for promoting awareness of T2DM/HTN risk factors and complications by considering determinants of low knowledge and negative perception among PLHIV
Magnitude and risk factors of non-communicable diseases among people living with HIV in Tanzania
This study has revealed that the magnitude of NCD risk factors is significantly higher among PLWHIV on ART than those not on ART. Initiating and strengthening of interventions for minimizing preventable NCD risks should be considered when initiating ART among PLWHIV. Regular monitoring of NCD risk factors is of paramount importance among ART patients
