Ethiopia
An ancient mainly Christian polity underwent immense expansion during the scramble for Africa to become modern Ethiopia, which has since been an incoherent and fragile state, prone to communal wars. Designed to address identity-related grievances, its 1994 constitution has become a battleground between unitarians and federalists. The unitarians (mostly the Amhara ethnic group), in alliance with foreign forces (Eritrea, United Arab Emirates (UAE),…
State-Building/State-Destroying in Ethiopia – A Backdrop to the Tigray Genocide
Federalist Tigray and unitarian Amhara have been historical rivals in the daunting task of state-building in Ethiopia. To neutralize Tigray and its de facto federalism (1872–89), Amhara found a formidable ally in Italy, which colluded with Britian to have “a place in the sun.” Amhara rewarded Italy with half of Tigray, which was christened “Eritrea,” and imposed the unitarian system in the country. Worse still, in the middle of the 1950s, Amhara …
The Historical Orbit of Eritrea’s Agony
Their suffering under racist Italian colonialism pushed Eritreans to retreat into their millennia-old Ethiopian identity. However, suffocation under Ethiopian political oppression and cultural chauvinism led them to don a distinct counter identity of Eritrean-ness. Subsequently, the thirty-year war between the forces of chauvinism (Ethiopia) and the forces of secession (Eritrea) has exposed the unimaginativeness of nationalism. Rather than seekin…

Is Multilingualism a Problematic Paradigm in Ethiopia
In Ethiopia, the promotion of Amharic by state nationalism was one of the factors that engendered counternationalisms such as the Eritrean secessionist movement. However, a free market of languages along with the domestication of English can contribute to managing/resolving communal conflicts and can usher the country into the global era. Such a liberal language policy does not jettison vernaculars; on the contrary, it permits them unlimited spac…
Nationalism in Historic Ethiopia
Historic Ethiopia (now Eritrea and Ethiopia) has suffered from extreme forms of ethno-regional nationalism for far too long. By focusing on the interactions between state nationalism, which engendered a plethora of counter nationalisms, and Eritrean separatism (Eritreanism), this article shows the futility of excessive nationalism as the politics of imagined identities that do not necessarily reflect realities and the urgent need to chart a fresh…
Diversity and democracy in Ethiopia
This paper, which sees democracy as an incremental habituation of a political culture that societies with modern economy entertain, argues that Ethiopia's current politics can only be understood as a transition from a totalitarian to a democratic culture. However, the transition to full-fledged liberal democracy is struggling to overcome two hurdles: the absence of a formidable middle class and the prevalence of a tenuous national identity. Even …
Diversity and state-building in Ethiopia
In multi-ethnic Ethiopia, diversity has been a serious obstacle to statebuilding. In fact, the process of state-building has been chequered with ethnic tensions, squabbles and conflicts. Although ethno-regional identity politics, at least in its most violent manifestation, is a relatively recent phenomenon in the country, its seeds had been sown with the rise of the absolutist state by the middle of the twentieth century. The political entreprene…
The Trans-Mareb Past in the Present
The beast lives unhistorically; for it ‘goes into’ the present, like a number, without leaving any curious remainder ... But man is always resisting the great and continually increasing weight of the past; it presses him down and bows his shoulders.– Friedrich Nietzsche, The Use and Abuse of History (Indianapolis, 1949), p. 5.If the past is ‘dead’, it dances, a lively corpse indeed, on new graves everywhere almost every day in whatever kind of ti…
