Production Technology and Provenance of Dvāravatī Glass Beads from Khu Bua, Central Thailand
The production technology and provenance of 22 beads from the Dvāravatī-period site of Khok Phithak at Khu Bua, central Thailand (6th–11th centuries CE), was investigated using a multi-analytical approach combining VP-SEM-EDS, LA-ICP-MS, and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Macroscopic and microstructural evidence indicates that most of the glass beads were manufactured by the drawn-tube method, consistent with the supply of imported Indo-Pacific beads …
Quantitative analysis of pigment mixtures on paper using fiber-optic reflectance spectroscopy and advanced optical modeling
Non-invasive methods are essential for studying materials in cultural heritage artworks. Among them, Fiber Optic Reflectance Spectroscopy (FORS) is widely employed for in situ analysis due to its portability and direct relationship with the optical properties governing color. However, FORS remains largely qualitative, as reflectance spectra of pigment mixtures show nonlinear behavior caused by complex absorption and scattering processes, especial…
Tracing Local Production and Agricultural Trade
Amphorae are a significant type of Roman pottery, serving as both transport containers and indicators of economic and technological practices across the Empire. Despite their importance in interpreting local economic dynamics in Roman Lusitania, the production origins, technological characteristics and functional roles of amphorae from Conímbriga in Portugal remain poorly understood. Previous research has focused primarily on typological comparis…
Provenance and technology of relief and/or lustre glazed ceramics from Mértola (Portugal)
Local production of relief, lustre and relief-lustre wares confirmed in Mértola by analysis of ceramics samples. • Distinct glaze technologies observed in samples from Mértola and Coimbra. • Coimbra samples linked to Middle Eastern lustre and glaze technology, indicating imports. • Lustre decorations were obtaine using coppr (Mértola) and silver plus copper (Mértola and Coimbra) This paper presents a study of a selection of lustre, relief, and lu…
Plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) of SiOx thin films on Portuguese limestone
Deposition of SiO x thin films on oolitic limestone by PECVD from TEOS was tested. • PECVD is effective in producing crack-free SiO x films with no damage to stone substrate. • SiO x thin films by PECVD do not increase the hydrophobicity of the stone. • SiO x thin films by PECVD maintain vapor permeability of the stone. • SiO x thin films by PECVD protect stone from biological and pollutant attack. Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD…
Archaeo-Material Study of the Cuneiform Tablet from Tel Beth-Shemesh
The Fifth Haverford excavation season at Tel Beth-Shemesh (Ain Shams) in 1933 revealed a fractured tablet bearing a cuneiform inscription dating to the Late Bronze Age. Considered to be the earliest alphabetic cuneiform text uncovered in the Canaanite arena outside of Ugarit, this tablet quickly became the focus of many studies. Later readings suggested that this was the earliest example of a South Semitic Alphabetical sequence. Through petrograp…
Ultra-Short Pulse Laser Cleaning of Contaminated Pleistocene Bone
The impact of wavelength and pulse duration in laser cleaning of hard blackish contaminants crust from archaeologically significant Pleistocene bone is investigated in this research. The objective is to determine the practical cleaning procedures and identify adequate laser parameters for cleaning archaeological bone from Sima de los Huesos (Spain) based on conservation and restoration perspectives. Bone surface cleaning was performed utilizing t…

The Bell Beaker site near Brodek u Prostějova (Czechia) has yielded remains of a large timber construction accompanied by four symmetrical ritual deposits with numerous artefacts, including more than fifty ceramic vessels. Their decoration consists of incised patterns, in nineteen cases with preserved white inlaid incrustations. To investigate the social relations at this extraordinary site, a multi-analytical and micro-destructive approach was e…
A Multi-Analytical Study of Egyptian Funerary Artifacts from Three Portuguese Museum Collections
A diachronic, multi-analytical approach combining EDXRF, μFTIR, μRaman, SEM-EDS, and Py-GC/MS has been adopted with the aim to study for the first time the painting materials used to decorate Egyptian funerary masks and sarcophagi ranging from the Late Period to the Roman Period and stored in the Archaeological National Museum (MNA) and the Carmo Archaeological Museum (MAC) of Lisbon and the Natural History Museum of the University in Oporto (MNH…
Medieval Tuscan glasses from Miranduolo, Italy
Islamic and post Islamic ceramics from the town of Santarém (Portugal)
Non-destructive characterization of archeological Cu-based artifacts from the early metallurgy of southern Portugal
New insights on Late Bronze Age Cu-metallurgy from Coles de Samuel hoard (Central Portugal)
A Combined Multi‐analytical Approach for the Study of Roman Glass From South‐west Iberia
An integrated, multi‐analytical approach combining the high sensitivity of SR‐μXRF, the light element capability of PIXE/PIGE under a helium flux and the spatial resolution of BSEM + EDS was used to characterize chemical composition and corrosion of glass samples (first to fourth centuries ad ) from an important, but scarcely investigated, Roman region of south‐west Iberia (southern Portugal). The geochemical trends and associations of major, min…
