  • Association of Employee Engagement Factors and Turnover Intention Among the 2015 U.S. Federal Government Workforce

    Open Access•Ilana O McCarthy, Ramal Moonesinghe et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2020

Employee turnover is a major challenge facing the federal workforce, which has lost more employees to voluntary turnover than any other form of turnover. This study determined the associations between engagement, demographic factors, and voluntary turnover intention by analyzing 2015 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey data. The findings indicate that employees with higher engagement levels are less likely to report an intention to leave their jobs…

  • Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Mortality

Open Access•Jeffrey E Hall, Ramal Moonesinghe et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

The value of disaggregating non-metropolitan and metropolitan area deaths in illustrating place-based health effects is evident. However, how place interacts with characteristics such as race/ethnicity has been less firmly established. This study compared socioeconomic characteristics and age-adjusted mortality rates by race/ethnicity in six rurality designations and assessed the contributions of mortality rate disparities between non-Hispanic bl…

  • Unequal Declines in Absolute and Relative Disparities in HIV Diagnoses Among Black Women, United States, 2008 to 2016

Hanna B Demeke, Anna Satcher Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2018•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 8

Objectives. To assess changes in disparities of HIV diagnosis rates among Black women aged 18 years or older living in the United States. Methods. We calculated estimated annual percent changes (EAPCs) in annual diagnosis rates, rate differences (absolute disparity), and rate ratios (relative disparity) for groups (total, US-born, and non–US-born) of Black women (referent was all White women) with diagnosed HIV infection, using data reported to t…

  • Racial/Ethnic Health Disparities Among Rural Adults — United States, 2012–2015

Open Access•Cara V James, Cara James et al.•ARTICLE•MMWR. Surveillance Summaries•2017

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Rural communities often have worse health outcomes, have less access to care, and are less diverse than urban communities. Much of the research on rural health disparities examines disparities between rural and urban communities, with fewer studies on disparities within rural communities. This report provides an overview of racial/ethnic health disparities for selected indicators in rural areas of the United States. REPORTING P…

  • Difference in Health Inequity between Two Population Groups due to a Social Determinant of Health

Open Access•Ramal Moonesinghe, Karen Bouye et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2014

The World Health Organization defines social determinants of health as "complex, integrated, and overlapping social structures and economic systems" that are responsible for most health inequities. Similar to the individual-level risk factors such as behavioral and biological risk factors that influence disease, we consider social determinants of health such as the distribution of income, wealth, influence and power as risk factors for risk of di…

  • Measures of Highly Functioning Health Coalitions

Priscilla A Barnes, Paul Campbell Erwin et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2014

In Tennessee, health coalitions provide guidance in conducting community assessments, health improvement plans and policies and delivering of health and human services, which are considered core functions of public health. In fact, it has been postulated that these coalitions may serve as the organizational embodiment of the local public health system (LPHS). This study identifies functional characteristics of 63 Tennessee County Health Councils …

  • Linear and Non-Linear Associations of Gonorrhea Diagnosis Rates with Social Determinants of Health

Open Access•Ramal Moonesinghe, Eleanor B Fleming et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2012

Identifying how social determinants of health (SDH) influence the burden of disease in communities and populations is critically important to determine how to target public health interventions and move toward health equity. A holistic approach to disease prevention involves understanding the combined effects of individual, social, health system, and environmental determinants on geographic area-based disease burden. Using 2006-2008 gonorrhea sur…

  • The effects on population health status of using dedicated property taxes to fund local public health agencies

    Open Access•Peggy A Honoré, Peter J Fos et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

There are both positive and negative consequences of using dedicated property taxes to fund public health. Policymakers should carefully examine both the positive association of improved health outcomes and negative impact of taxation on poor populations before authorizing the use of dedicated local property tax levies to fund public health agencies

  • Institutional and Economic Determinants of Public Health System Performance

Glen P Mays, Megan Mchugh et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2006•Citada por: 23•Referencias: 24

Objectives. Although a growing body of evidence demonstrates that availability and quality of essential public health services vary widely across communities, relatively little is known about the factors that give rise to these variations. We examined the association of institutional, financial, and community characteristics of local public health delivery systems and the performance of essential services. Methods. Performance measures were colle…
