Outcomes of Preterm Infants Admitted to Canadian Nicus Before and During the Sars-COV Pandemic
There were no significant differences in major morbidity or mortality rates in preterm infants between pre-pandemic and pandemic cohorts in Canadian NICUs
Facilitators and Barriers to the Implementation of Family Integrated Care in Ontario Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Units
Background/Objectives : In Ontario, approximately 8% (11,000) of infants are born preterm (22- Methods : Using a cross-sectional study design, two surveys (leadership and site resources) were developed using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Science Research's innovation, inner setting, and outer setting constructs and distributed to Level II NICUs medical and nursing leaders. Results : The surveys were sent to 44 Level II NICUs in On…
A Pilot Study of Family-Integrated Care (FICare) in Critically Ill Preterm and Term Infants in the Nicu
Family-integrated care (FICare) is associated with improved developmental outcomes and decreased parental mental health risks in stable preterm infants. However, less is known about its application in critically ill infants who are at greater risk for adverse outcomes. The objective of this study was to assess the safety and feasibility of implementation of an augmented FICare program, FICare Plus, in critically ill infants in the first few weeks…
Understanding the Family Context
Enabling individualized decision-making for patients requires an understanding of the family context (FC) by healthcare providers. The FC is everything that makes the family unique, from their names, preferred pronouns, family structure, cultural or religious beliefs, and family values. While there is an array of approaches for individual clinicians to incorporate the FC into practice, there is a paucity of literature guiding the process of colle…
Building Connections with Families
The use of an asynchronous video-messaging service was perceived as beneficial to both parents and staff in the NICU. Complaints pertained to the impact of the technology on nursing workflow and the difficulty using the hardware provided for use of the service
Racial centrality may be linked to mistrust in healthcare institutions for African Americans
Evidence suggests that racial identity is an important component to African Americans' self-concepts and therefore may be relevant to patients' trust in healthcare, yet little is known as to how racial identity may influence trust or mistrust. African American adults ( N = 220) in the greater Portland, Oregon, area provided survey reports of healthcare-related attitudes and experiences. Those who reported higher racial centrality had lower trust …
African American experiences in healthcare
African Americans experience poor communication with their health care providers, medical mistrust, and perceived discrimination when accessing health care in numerous and sometimes interrelated ways. The investigators recommend ways to reduce the experience of such barriers and to improve patient-provider relationships for African Americans in health care. (PsycINFO Database Record
Perceptions of Health Professionals on Pain in Extremely Low Gestational Age Infants
Extremely low gestational age infants (<28 weeks at birth) experience significant pain from repeated therapeutic procedures while hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit. As part of a program of research examining pain in preterm infants, we conducted a qualitatively driven mixed-methods design, supplemented with a qualitative and quantitative component, to understand how health care professionals (HCPs) assess and manage procedural pain…
The Influence of Context on Pain Practices in the Nicu
In this qualitative descriptive study, we explored health care professionals' perceptions of the influence of context (i.e., organizational culture, structure, resources, capabilities/competencies, and politics) on evidence-based pain practices. A total of 16 focus groups with 147 health care professionals were conducted in three neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in central and eastern Canada. Three overarching themes emerged from the data, w…
Reducing HIV and Partner Violence Risk Among Women with Criminal Justice System Involvement
Violence Against Women With HIV Risk and Recent Criminal Justice System Involvement
This research note examines the prevalence and correlates of intimate partner violence (IPV) and other violence (OV) among women (N = 529) at risk for HIV and with histories of criminal justice system involvement. The 3-month prevalences of IPV and OV were 31.2% and 18.7%, respectively. IPV was associated with having a current main partner, substance use, sexual risk behavior, trading sex, anxiety, depression, and lower self-esteem. OV was associ…
Uncovering Patterns of HIV Risk Through Multiple Housing Measures
Social relationships of men at risk for Aids
Primary Relationships Affect the Psychological Health of Homosexual Men at Risk for Aids
Less is known about the effects of primary relationships on psychological health for homosexual men and women than for heterosexual men and women. Given the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the primary relationships of homosexual men are especially important to examine at the present time. Using questionnaire data collected from 259 homosexual men, this study examined the effects of status and quality of relationship on psychological health. Analysis indicated…
Effects of HIV infection, perceived health and clinical status on a cohort at risk for aids
