The transformable canon
Studies of the reasons fans transform texts for the most part leave unanswered the question of why particular kinds of texts are transformed by fans more frequently than others. All texts are technically available for fan transformation. However, not all texts are equally transformed. It is an objective fact that some TV shows attract more transformative fan engagement than others. In this article, I argue that formal properties of texts make the…
Civic culture in the Supernatural fandom
In the 2020 US presidential election, Misha Collins, star of the show Supernatural, endorsed Joe Biden for president and worked to support Biden’s campaign through interviews with campaign surrogates on Instagram Live and by phone banking on Zoom. In this study, we examine how fans made sense of Misha’s political action. While the political science and advertising literature on celebrity endorsements evaluates endorsements by the number of votes …
Doing economics otherwise, from one crisis to the next
This is a fated, if fraught time, to offer some thoughts on the state of the community that surrounds the Journal of Cultural Economy (JCE). When I originally conceived the idea of writing an edito
Plastic Empowerment
Plastic Empowerment:Financial Literacy and Black Economic Life Carolyn Hardin (bio) and Armond R. Towns (bio) Of the multiple changes to consumer banking in the last fifty years, decreases in savings, increases in borrowing, and the shift from a cash to a plastic economy have received the most attention.1 A recent spate of books like Mehrsa Baradaran's How the Other Half Banks and Lisa Servon's Unbanking of America focuses on a related but perhap…
Risking together
It is by now common sense that developed economies are characterized by growing and extreme inequality (Stiglitz 2013, Piketty 2014). Dick Bryan and Michael Rafferty offer a provocative caveat in R
The politics of finance
Cultural economy of finance examines the cultural constitution and implications of financial markets in light of the growing financialization of economies and social life. In the effort to explain ‘how finance actually works’, it rejects both depoliticized mainstream financial economics and predetermined Marxist political economy. However, this rejection has resulted in a lack of analyses of the politics of finance. In this paper, I suggest that …
Introducing a cultural approach to technology in financial markets
This paper offers a cultural approach to technology as an alternative to what we see as a prevailing treatment of technology in social studies of finance. This latter treatment, which we refer to as the 'tools of coordination' approach, sees technologies as mediators of market behavior that promote standardization and coordination. While this may be one important function of some technologies, taking a cultural approach to studying financial tech…
Finding the ‘Neo’ in Neoliberalism
'Liberalism' and 'neoliberalism' have become important shorthand terms in critical work that seeks to incorporate issues of economics into ideological and epochal analyses. Yet, these terms incorporate theoretical histories and refer to historical contexts so vast that they can seem ambiguous and boundaryless. This ambiguity threatens to reduce the analytical usefulness of the terms liberalism and neoliberalism. In this paper, I map the legacies …
Contributions to a Conjunctural Theory of Valuation
Debates over the nature of contemporary capitalism, further stimulated by its most recent financial crisis, have led to a renewed problematization of value. Existing understandings of the process of valuation may not make visible what is new or unique in the contemporary conjuncture. This paper presents a diagram of value transformations that is conjunctural in that it arises out of and responds to the conjuncture. It describes the complexity of …
Neoliberal Temporality
The decline of traditional pensions and the rise of individualized retirement accounts such as 401(k)s can be read as a neoliberal program of transferring risk and responsibility for providing retirement income from employers to workers. Subsequent to this shift, American workers are facing a "retirement savings crisis." While the stagnation of incomes in the United States has certainly contributed to this crisis, I argue that the specific tempor…
