The Family Bereavement Program
This article presents an experimental evaluation of the Family Bereavement Program (FBP), a 2-component group intervention for parentally bereaved children ages 8-16. The program involved separate groups for caregivers, adolescents, and children, which were designed to change potentially modifiable risk and protective factors for bereaved children. The evaluation involved random assignment of 156 families (244 children and adolescents) to the FBP…
Affect Pattern Recognition
Self-report affect sequences generated during a conversation between spouses were used to illustrate how Hidden Markov Model (HMM) methodology can classify couples according to marital quality. This pattern recognition technique allows an investigator to characterize processes that generate observable phenomenain these data, expressed affect. I introduce the conceptual foundations and, briefly, the methodology of HMM and discuss its potential use…
Engaging Fathers in the Post-Divorce Family
Data we collected in longitudinal and cross-sectional studies of divorcing families provide an empirical basis for understanding the dynamics of divorced fathering. Our findings focus on the difficult circumstances of divorced fathers, rather than on their defective characters. We find that fathers continue visiting and paying at high levels when they perceive that they retain some degree of paternal authority. The loss of this sense of paternal …
Explaining Family Interactions
Assessing Marital Quality with Distressed and Nondistressed Couples
Analysis of behavioral durations in observational studies of social interaction
Many social science disciplines investigate dyadic or triadic social interaction by recording the interactive behaviors as qualitative codes. This article introduces a method for analyzing and interpreting variation in the durations of coded behaviors obtained during such interactions. Using survival analysis and event history analysis as its basis, this article discusses the use of regression techniques that enable the researcher to assess how t…
