  • Radiocarbon Dating and Freshwater Reservoir Effects of Aquatic Mollusks Within Fluvial Channel Deposits in the Midwestern United States

    Open Access•Jason A Rech, Christina N Tenison et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 38

Late Quaternary fluvial channel deposits are notoriously difficult to date. In the midwestern United States, shells of aquatic mollusks can be found within many fluvial channel sediments and therefore can be radiocarbon ( 14 C) dated to determine the age of the deposits. However, carbonate platform rocks are abundant in this region, potentially causing freshwater 14 C reservoir effects (FRE) in mollusk shells. We 14 C dated 11 aquatic gastropod a…

  • Oxygen isotopes in terrestrial gastropod shells track Quaternary climate change in the American Southwest

    Open Access•Jason A Rech, Jeffrey S Pigati et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2021

Recent studies have shown the oxygen isotopic composition (δ 18 O) of modern terrestrial gastropod shells is determined largely by the δ 18 O of precipitation. This implies that fossil shells could be used to reconstruct the δ 18 O of paleo-precipitation as long as the isotopic system, including the hydrologic pathways of the local watershed and the gastropod systematics, is well understood. In this study, we measured the δ 18 O values of 456 ind…

  • In-stream wetland deposits, megadroughts, and cultural change in the northern Atacama Desert, Chile

Open Access•Craig David Tully, Jason A Rech et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2019

A key concern regarding current and future climate change is the possibility of sustained droughts that can have profound impacts on societies. As such, multiple paleoclimatic proxies are needed to identify megadroughts, the synoptic climatology responsible for these droughts, and their impacts on past and future societies. In the hyperarid Atacama Desert of northern Chile, many streams are characterized by perennial flow and support dense in-str…

  • Overview of the oxygen isotope systematics of land snails from North America

    Open Access•Yurena Yanes, Nasser M Al-Qattan et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2019

Continental paleoclimate proxies with near-global coverage are rare. Land snail δ 18 O is one of the few proxies abundant in Quaternary sediments ranging from the tropics to the high Arctic tundra. However, its application in paleoclimatology remains difficult, attributable in part to limitations in published calibration studies. Here we present shell δ 18 O of modern small ( 18 O at a coarse scale. This transect is augmented by published δ 18 O …

  • From the Pacific to the Tropical Forests

    Open Access•C M Santoro, Eugenia Gayó et al.•ARTICLE•Chungara•2019•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 23

The social groups that initially inhabited the hyper arid core of the Atacama Desert of northern Chile during the late Pleistocene integrated a wide range of local, regional and supra regional goods and ideas for their social reproduction as suggested by the archaeological evidence contained in several open camps in Pampa del Tamarugal (PdT). Local resources for maintaining their every-day life, included stone raw material, wood, plant and animal…

  • Activation of a small ephemeral lake in southern Jordan during the last full glacial period and its paleoclimatic implications

    Open Access•Gentry A Catlett, Jason A Rech et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2017

Playas, or ephemeral lakes, are one of the most common depositional environments in arid and semiarid lands worldwide. Playa deposits, however, have mostly been avoided as paleoclimatic archives because they typically contain exceptionally low concentrations of organic material, making 14 C dating difficult. Here, we describe a technique for concentrating organic matter in sediments for radiocarbon dating and apply it to playa sediments recovered…

  • Late Pleistocene human occupation of the hyperarid core in the Atacama Desert, northern Chile

    Open Access•Claudio Latorre, C M Santoro et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Reviews•2013

Few archeological sites in South America contain uncontroversial evidence for when the first peopling of the continent occurred. Largely ignored in this debate, extreme environments are assumed either as barriers to this early wave of migration or without potential for past habitability. Here, we report on a rare 12–13 ka human occupation from Quebrada Maní (site QM12), a plantless, near rainless landscape (1240 m asl and 85 km from the Pacific O…

  • Radiocarbon ages of terrestrial gastropods extend duration of ice-free conditions at the Two Creeks forest bed, Wisconsin, USA

    Open Access•Jason A Rech, Jeffrey C Nekola et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2012

Analysis of terrestrial gastropods that underlie the late Pleistocene Two Creeks forest bed (~ 13,800–13,500 cal yr BP) in eastern Wisconsin, USA provides evidence for a mixed tundra-taiga environment prior to formation of the taiga forest bed. Ten new AMS 14 C analyses on terrestrial gastropod shells indicate the mixed tundra-taiga environment persisted from ~ 14,500 to 13,900 cal yr BP. The Twocreekan climatic substage, representing ice-free co…

  • Assessing Open-System Behavior of 14 C in Terrestrial Gastropod Shells

    Open Access•Jason A Rech, Jeffrey S Pigati et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2011•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 26

In order to assess open-system behavior of radiocarbon in fossil gastropod shells, we measured the 14 C activity on 10 aliquots of shell material recovered from Illinoian (~190–130 ka) and pre-Illinoian (~800 ka) loess and lacustrine deposits in the Midwestern USA. Eight of the 10 aliquots yielded measurable 14 C activities that ranged from 0.25 to 0.53 percent modern carbon (pMC), corresponding to apparent 14 C ages between 48.2 and 42.1 ka. Thi…

  • Paleowetlands and regional climate change in the central Atacama Desert, northern chile

    Open Access•Jay Quade, Jason A Rech et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2008

Widespread, organic-rich diatomaceous deposits are evidence for formerly wetter times along the margins of the central Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth today. We mapped and dated these paleowetland deposits at three presently waterless locations near Salar de Punta Negra (24.5°S) on the western slope of the Andes. Elevated groundwater levels supported phreatic discharge into wetlands during two periods: 15,900 to ~ 13,800 and 12,…

    Open Access•Jason A Rech, Leslie A Quintero et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2007•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 4

The 'Ayoun Qedim locality includes seven deflated Acheulian sites within and around a limestone box canyon, Juwit el Ghuweir, in the northern al‐Jafr Basin, Jordan. Survey of these sites identified dense scatters of Acheulian bifaces ( _ 1650) along with debris, cores, and reduction material from their production and maintenance. Although there is a clear Levallois component in the assemblages, reflecting a Late Acheulian occupation, strictly Mid…

  • New Uses for Old Laboratory Techniques

    Jason A Rech•ARTICLE•Near Eastern Archaeology•2004•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 1

Mortar and plaster were used extensively in the ancient Near East to construct floors, walls, roads, aqueducts and even to create art. As a result, these materials are virtually ubiquitous in archaeological excavations today. Imagine, therefore, how important it would be for dating ancient sites if we could accurately determine the age of mortar or plaster using modern techniques. This is exactly what many scientists who work with radiocarbon dat…

  • Direct dating of plaster and mortar using AMS Radiocarbon

    Open Access•Jason A Rech, Alysia A Fischer et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2003•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 8

The authors demonstrate the potential for dating structures in Near Eastern archaeology by applying AMS radiocarbon to organic inclusions found in mortar and plaster. The method was successfully applied to date and sequence excavated walls and floors, and to spot-date structures exposed in surveys
