Undocumented Migrants’ Experiences of a Recovery-Oriented Group Intervention and Its Impact on Their Mental Well-Being
The Method for the Empowerment of Trauma Survivors (METS) is a recovery-oriented group intervention tailored to refugees and asylum seekers who experienced traumatic events. This study explores how undocumented migrants in the Netherlands experience participation in METS, how these experiences relate to changes in their mental well-being, and which aspects of the intervention participants find most valuable. A qualitative case study was conducted…

Can Circumstances Be Softened? Self-Efficacy, Post-Migratory Stressors, and Mental Health among Refugees
Post-migratory stressors (PS) are a risk factor for mental health problems among resettled refugees. There is a need to identify factors which can reduce this burden. Self-efficacy (SE) is associated with refugees' mental health. The current study examined whether SE can protect this group from the impact of PS on mental wellbeing. Higher levels of PS were expected to be associated with higher levels of mental health problems. In addition, we exp…
Mental health consequences of long-term stays in refugee camps
This study offers quantitative support for the notion that the adverse conditions in Moria camp deteriorate the mental health of its inhabitants as suggested in qualitative research. Although this study does not provide evidence of causality, it is likely that the poor and unsafe living conditions, challenging refugee determination procedures, and a lack of mental health services in the camp are significant contributing factors. We urgently call …
The mental health of trafficked persons
This chapter addresses mental health problems prevailing in trafficked persons (TPs), particular stressors which may elicit these, and how treatment may help. The Equator approach entails weekly group meetings offering psycho-education and stabilising exercises to TPs staying in the shelter, and a behavioural screening of participants in close co-operation with on the spot counsellors. Trafficked men and women are frequently exposed to severe psy…

The validation of a social functioning questionnaire in an African postconflict context
This study evaluated the reliability and criterion validity of the Byumba Social Functioning Questionnaire (BSFQ), an instrument to measure social functioning in Rwanda. The instrument was locally composed in concordance with a well-described method for culture-specific and sex-specific function assessment. Respondents in a Northern Province of Rwanda ( N = 393) were assessed with the BSFQ and a 19-item scale (SF-19) drawn from the Medical Outcom…
Factors affecting mental health of local staff working in the Vanni region, Sri Lanka
In the aftermath of the civil war that extended from 1983-2009, humanitarian organizations provided aid to the conflict-affected population of the Vanni region in northern Sri Lanka. In August, 2010, a needs assessment was conducted to determine the mental-health status of Sri Lankan national humanitarian aid staff working in conditions of stress and hardship, and consider contextual and organizational characteristics influencing such status. A t…
Mental Health Symptoms Following War and Repression in Eastern Afghanistan
CONTEXT: Decades of armed conflict, suppression, and displacement resulted in a high prevalence of mental health symptoms throughout Afghanistan. Its Eastern province of Nangarhar is part of the region that originated the Taliban movement. This may have had a distinct impact on the living circumstances and mental health condition of the province's population. OBJECTIVES: To determine the rate of exposure to traumatic events; estimate prevalence r…
