Polysubstance Use Trajectories and Social-Ecological Predictors in a Multi-Ethnic Sample of Adolescents
Background Substance use—including the use and co-use of alcohol, cigarettes, and illicit drugs—often emerges in adolescence. However, the longitudinal structure of polysubstance use and its social-ecological predictors are less understood. We examined (a) higher-order trajectories of polysubstance use (encompassing alcohol, cigarette, and illicit drug use) and (b) their associations with individual- and family-level factors. Methods Participants …
Parent–Child Relationship Characteristics and Psychiatric Symptoms as Predictors of Passive Suicidal Ideation among Adolescents in Outpatient Substance Use Treatment
Adolescents with substance use disorders (SUDs) are at higher risk for negative outcomes including suicidal ideation (SI). This is due in part to high rates of comorbid psychiatric disorders among adolescents diagnosed with a SUD. Among adolescents, SI is a sign of psychological distress that may interfere with substance use treatment engagement and completion. Identification of factors that are significant predictors of SI among adolescents enga…
Relations Between Harmful Substance Use, Minority Stressors and Other Psychosocial Resources Among Bisexual Emerging Adult Women and Men
Transgender Emerging Adults Reporting Complex Patterns of Intimate Partner Violence
Purpose The present study described associations between profile membership, based on lifetime experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV) and three conceptually relevant groups of variables hypothesized to facilitate vulnerability to IPV among emerging adults: Risky substance use, lifetime experiences of adversity, and dysfunctional relationship characteristics. Methods An ethnically and racially diverse sample of U.S. transgender adults ( N …
Multivariate Relations Between Lifetime Adversity and Substance Use Involvement
This study investigated multivariate relations between (a) lifetime experiences of adversity and (b) past year substance use involvement among cisgender sexual minority emerging adult men, ages 18–29 years. Ethnically and racially diverse samples of gay (N = 205, ageM = 24.33 years) and bisexual men (N = 201, ageM = 23.31 years) were recruited from the United States using the internet-based CloudResearch platform to complete 20-minute online surv…
Multivariate patterns of substance use, minority stress and environmental violence associated with sexual revictimization of lesbian and bisexual emerging adult women
This study documented between-group differences in factors associated with sexual revictimization histories in a sample of young sexual minority women. Diverse samples of lesbian ( N = 204, age M = 23.55 years) and bisexual ( N = 249, age M = 23.35 years) women from the United States were recruited using the CloudResearch platform to assess factors associated with recent experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV). Participants were categorize…
Childhood maltreatment, psychiatric symptoms, and suicidal thoughts among adolescents receiving substance use treatment services
INTRODUCTION: Childhood maltreatment experiences are associated with future suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts, yet the roles of specific psychiatric symptoms mediating this relation remain to be clarified. To clarify these relations, we tested a model incorporating multiple forms of childhood maltreatment (sexual abuse, physical punishment, emotional neglect), past year psychiatric disorder symptoms during adolescence (anxiety, mood, and con…
Using the Niaaa brief alcohol screener in social work practice for selected prevention targeting youth
This article discusses the use of brief screeners in social work practice to identity adolescents in need of selected interventions for alcohol and other drug use problems. Brief screeners can increase access to alcohol or other drug intervention services and promote the diffusion of evidence-based interventions to underserved communities when integrated in Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) initiatives. The two-item …
Childhood Maltreatment Histories, Alcohol and Other Drug Use Symptoms, and Sexual Risk Behavior in a Treatment Sample of Adolescents
Objectives. We tested a structural model of relations among self-reported childhood maltreatment, alcohol and other drug abuse and dependence symptoms, and sexual risk behavior in a sample of adolescents receiving outpatient treatment of substance use problems. Methods. Structured interviews were administered to an ethnically diverse sample of 394 adolescents (114 girls, 280 boys; mean = 16.30 years; SD = 1.15 years; 44.9% Hispanic, 20.6% African…
Psychiatric Symptom Typology in a Sample of Youth Receiving Substance Abuse Treatment Services
Maltreatment Clusters Among Youth in Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment
Psychiatric symptom patterns, proximal risk factors, and sexual risk behaviors among youth in outpatient substance abuse treatment
The purpose of the current study was to classify adolescents receiving outpatient treatment for alcohol or other drug (AOD) problems via self-reports of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed. American Psychiatric Association, 1994) psychiatric symptoms, and to identify group differences in measures of proximal risk factors for sexual risk behaviors (SRBs) and self-reported SRBs. Structured interviews were administered …
Heterogeneity in patterns of sexual risk behaviors among african‐american youth
This descriptive study employed a within‐groups analytic approach to examine patterns of sexual risk behavior and co‐occurring general and race/ethnicity‐specific risk and protective factors in a community sample of African‐American youth (n = 436). Cluster analysis was used to classify young adults by levels of self‐reported past year sexual risk behaviors. MANOVA, ANOVA, and chi‐square analyses indicated significant associations between cluster…
Racial Identity
This article outlines current knowledge and lines of research regarding racial identity and, in particular, African American racial identity. A developmental psychological framework is proposed as a means of integrating and synthesizing 2 lines of racial identity research that have emerged within the existing literature: (a) the developmental line of research and (b) the adjustment outcome line of research. The proposed integration of the current…
Abuse Experiences in a Community Sample of Young Adults
This study documents significant associations among lifetime abuse experiences, psychiatric diagnoses, and sexual risk behaviors in a multiethnic community sample of young men and women ( N = 1803) in South Florida. Self‐report data were collected via structured interviews as part of a longitudinal follow‐up of a larger school‐based study. Participants were grouped according to extent of lifetime abuse experiences. Cumulative lifetime abuse exper…
Associations Between Early-Adolescent Substance Use and Subsequent Young-Adult Substance Use Disorders and Psychiatric Disorders Among a Multiethnic Male Sample in South Florida
Objectives. We examined the associations among early-adolescent substance use, subsequent young-adult substance use disorders, and psychiatric disorders among a community sample of males. Methods. Early-adolescent data were collected in classroom surveys (1990–1993), and young-adult data were collected in face-to-face interviews (1998–2000). Results. We found strong associations between early-adolescent substance use and young-adult substance use…
Condom Use, Condom Refusal, and Substituted Sexual Behaviors Among Youth at Higher and Lower Risk for HIV Infection
The purpose of this study was to describe sexual behaviors that youth substitute for protected intercourse when a partner refuses to use a condom or a condom is not used. Participants included: (a) 120 adolescents (mean age 17.2 years) undergoing substance abuse treatment and (b) 171 university students (mean age 21.3 years). The treatment sample reported significantly higher levels of discrete risk factors for HIV exposure. While only a small pr…
Amenability and Implementation in Secondary School Antitobacco Programs
After controlling for other school and community factors, classroom activities remained significant predictors of program effectiveness. Findings may have implications for the design of secondary interventions to promote teacher efficacy related to delivery of antitobacco programs
Anticipated Mortality, HIV Vulnerability, and Psychological Distress Among Adolescents and Young Adults at Higher and Lower Risk for HIV Infection
Risky sexual behavior among substance-abusing adolescents
Of 120 substance-abusing adolescents and young adults undergoing treatment, the majority reported engaging in several types of risky sexual behavior, both with and without concurrent substance use. Data analysis revealed that AIDS knowledge, decision-making style, drinking motives, and perceived vulnerability to HIV were significant predictors of such behavior. Findings are discussed with a view to enhancing prevention efforts among high-risk ado…
Continuity of difficult temperament in adolescence
Continuity and discontinuity in the affective experiences of parents and children
Canonical correlation described continuity and discontinuity in salient covariates of emotional and interactional components in parent-child relationships among NYLS participants from middle adolescence to young adulthood. The results underscore the importance of multiple indicators of parent-child relationship quality, and their implications for assessment and intervention efforts are discussed
Temperament and adjustment in young adulthood
The relationship between easy/difficult temperament and adjustment from middle adolescence to young adulthood was examined. Cluster analysis revealed four groups of individuals via composite temperament scores over three points of measurement. Multivariate analyses indicated that extremely difficult temperament was associated with poorer psychosocial functioning in childhood and young adulthood
Conceptual Issues in Studying Continuity and Discontinuity in Personality Development Across Life
In this article, we argue that the continuity‐discontinuity of personality development is not just an empirical issue, but is also a metatheoretical and theoretical issue Stances taken in regard to one of three metatheories (or models)—the orgamsmic, the mechanistic, and the developmental contextual—determine theoretical ideas about ( a ) the units of analysis thought to be relevant to personality development, ( b ) the processes believed to gove…
Use of a State‐Level Pharmaceutical Assistance Program Among Urban and Rural Elders
A number of state‐level pharmaceutical assistance programs have been established as a result of the growing recognition of the role of Pharmaceuticals in the long‐term care of the elderly. However, existing research does not provide a coherent expectation for patterns of use by rural and urban elderly. The data for this analysis are drawn from a larger study of the Pennsylvania Pharmaceutical Assistance Contract for the Elderly (PACE). PACE provi…
