The sociocultural and psychological impacts of the Exxon Valdez oil spill were examined in a population-based study of 594 men and women living in 13 Alaskan communities approximately one year after the spill occurred. On September 13, 1987, two metal and paper scavengers of the city of Goiania (pop. 1,000,000), in the central Brazilian state of Goias (pop. 13,000,000) entered an abandoned clinic in search of scrap metal. Fishing Cooperatives and Political Power
This paper suggests that by organizing fishermen into cooperatives designed to purchase and operate the larger seiners various problems could be alleviated. The production capacities and economies of scale would provide improved incomes to its members.
