  • Health and the running body

    Open Access•Richard Shipway, Immy Holloway•ARTICLE•International Review for the…•2016•Citada por: 16•Referencias: 32

This article aims to develop one of the major themes from an ethnographic study of the culture of distance running - the desire for health and fitness. Research was undertaken over a 2-year period using a variety of flexible qualitative data sources, most notably observation and in-depth interviews. The body, especially the 'running body', is seen by participants in this study as a source of health and well-being and affirmation of their identity…

  • Organisations, practices, actors, and events

Open Access•Richard Shipway, Immy Holloway et al.•ARTICLE•International Review for the…•2013•Citada por: 29•Referencias: 29

This paper revisits Unruh's notions of social worlds, exploring the organisations, practices, events and actors involved within the culture of distance running, as an increasingly popular leisure activity. An ethnographic research design was utilised using a combination of interviews, observation and participant observation. Data was collected over a two-year period on a weekly basis at two local distance running clubs, and also at a series of in…

  • Essentials of a qualitative doctorate

    Immy Holloway•BOOK•Essentials of a qualitative…•2012

Have you been working toward a qualitative doctorate without a guide? Immy Holloway and Lorraine Brown are here to help. Breaking down the process step by step, this book gives essential advice on navigating the whole program. You'll first get some tips on selecting a research topic and writing a proposal. From there, you'll receive guidance on your research journey, all the way through the completion (and publication!) your dissertation. Also in…

  • Being a Qualitative Researcher

    Open Access•Immy Holloway, Francis C Biley•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2011•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 22

This article, from a keynote address, is the result of some of the things which I learned about qualitative research during my many years of doing and teaching it. The main point I make is that qualitative researchers should present a good story which is based on evidence but focused on meaning rather than measurement. In qualitative inquiry, the researchers' selves are involved, their experiences become a resource. Researchers cannot distance th…

  • Parental distress around supplementing breastfed babies using nasogastric tubes on the post‐natal ward

Open Access•Alison M Taylor, Michele Cloherty et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Nutrition•2008

There is abundant evidence of the benefits of breastfeeding. In the UK, supplementation in hospital has consistently been shown to be associated with shortened duration of breastfeeding. This paper reports on a subset of the data from an ethnographic study that explored the expectations, beliefs and experiences of mothers and health professionals concerning supplementation, using a variety of methods, of breastfed babies in an English maternity u…

  • The Status of Method

    Open Access•Immy Holloway, Les Todre et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research•2003•Citada por: 113•Referencias: 4

Many elements of qualitative research are shared between the variety of approaches, and often the overlap of epistemology, ethics and procedures encourages a generic and flexible view of this type of inquiry. This article argues that there is an essential tension between flexibility on the one hand, and consistency and coherence on the other. Such tension may encourage qualitative researchers to consider the intentions and philosophical underpinn…

  • Giving hope in brain injury. An exploration of families' experiences with the brainwave organisation and therapy

    Open Access•Farnaz Heidari, Alison Dumbrell et al.•ARTICLE•Children & Society•2002

This exploratory study examined families' experiences during the care of brain‐injured children being treated with therapy from the Brainwave organisation. Families highlighted areas of dissatisfaction with existing services. The friendly and positive attitudes they received from Brainwave staff were an indication of hope for the future. Involvement in their children's care and being valued during decision making were advantages attributed to the…

  • The Transition from Well Person to “Pain Afflicted” Patient

    Open Access•Immy Holloway, Beatrice Sofaer et al.•ARTICLE•Illness Crisis & Loss•2000•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 12

This article aims to show how people with chronic back pain manage the status passage from being well persons to becoming “pain afflicted” patients and how they see their own progression through the pain career path. This is examined through in-depth narrative interviews. The data were processed through thematic analysis. It was found that during the transition, a change in perceived identity occurs and that people grieve over the loss of their f…

  • Qualitative Health Research with Children

    Open Access•Lorraine Ireland, Immy Holloway•ARTICLE•Children & Society•1996

The authors of this article identify and discuss some of the practical and ethical issues of qualitative research with children. The problems are illustrated through a research study about children's experience of asthma, and the way in which they perceive and interpret their condition. It is shown that social research with children has inherent difficulties relating to access, ethical and developmental issues. Researchers do not only have to gai…
