  • Participation behaviour of different migrant groups in breast cancer screening – palpation of the breast and mammography. Results from the German national cohort (Nako)

Open Access•Heiko Becher, Nadia Obi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Migration and Health•2026

In contrast to earlier studies, our findings suggest that MSP participation and motivation does not significantly differ by migration status or language skills. This may indicate that information on MSP is broadly accessible through established invitation procedures in Germany. However, lower uptake of breast palpation by a physician in some migrant populations highlights potential gaps in broader preventive care engagement

  • What can we learn from an intersectionality-informed description of study participants? Results from the German National Cohort

Open Access•Philipp Jaehn, Stefan Rach et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2025

Our results showed that heterogeneity within social categories can be revealed by applying the concept of intersectionality when comparing study participants with an external population. This way, an intersectionality-informed approach contributes to describing social complexity among study participants more precisely. Furthermore, results can be used to reduce participation barriers in a more targeted way

  • From cigarettes to symptoms

Open Access•Maja P Völker, Chiara Callies et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Our findings support an association between smoking and depression. Robust dose-response relationships were found, with higher cigarette consumption associated with more severe depressive symptoms, and longer time since cessation linked to lower depression levels. These results highlight smoking as a meaningful and modifiable contributor to current and lifetime depression, suggesting that quitting smoking or reducing cigarette consumption may ben…

  • Worldwide trends in underweight and obesity from 1990 to 2022

    Open Access•Nowell H Phelps, Rosie Singleton et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2024

BACKGROUND: Underweight and obesity are associated with adverse health outcomes throughout the life course. We estimated the individual and combined prevalence of underweight or thinness and obesity, and their changes, from 1990 to 2022 for adults and school-aged children and adolescents in 200 countries and territories. METHODS: ). For school-aged children and adolescents, we report thinness (BMI 2 SD above the median). FINDINGS: From 1990 to 20…

  • Mental health of individuals with pre-existing mental illnesses at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Janine Stein, Alexander Pabst et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic prompted a range of studies on mental health, with mixed results. While numerous studies reported worsened conditions in individuals with pre-existing mental disorders, others showed resilience and stability in mental health. However, longitudinal data focusing on the German population are sparse, especially regarding effects of age and pre-existing mental disorders during the early stages of the pandemic. Object…

  • Birth Order, Caesarean Section, or Daycare Attendance in Relation to Child- and Adult-Onset Type 1 Diabetes

Open Access•Justine Tanoey, Christina Baechle et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

    (1) Background: Global incidence of type 1 diabetes (T1D) is rising and nearly half occurred in adults. However, it is unclear if certain early-life childhood T1D risk factors were also associated with adult-onset T1D. This study aimed to assess associations between birth order, delivery mode or daycare attendance and type 1 diabetes (T1D) risk in a population-based cohort and whether these were similar for childhood- and adult-onset T1D (cut-off…

  • Worldwide trends in hypertension prevalence and progress in treatment and control from 1990 to 2019

    Open Access•Bin Zhou, Rodrigo M Carrillo-Larco et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2021

BACKGROUND: Hypertension can be detected at the primary health-care level and low-cost treatments can effectively control hypertension. We aimed to measure the prevalence of hypertension and progress in its detection, treatment, and control from 1990 to 2019 for 200 countries and territories. METHODS: We used data from 1990 to 2019 on people aged 30-79 years from population-representative studies with measurement of blood pressure and data on blo…

  • Height and body-mass index trajectories of school-aged children and adolescents from 1985 to 2019 in 200 countries and territories

    Open Access•Andrea Rodriguez-Martinez, Andrea Rodriguez‐Martinez et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2020

BACKGROUND: Comparable global data on health and nutrition of school-aged children and adolescents are scarce. We aimed to estimate age trajectories and time trends in mean height and mean body-mass index (BMI), which measures weight gain beyond what is expected from height gain, for school-aged children and adolescents. METHODS: For this pooled analysis, we used a database of cardiometabolic risk factors collated by the Non-Communicable Disease …

  • Rising rural body-mass index is the main driver of the global obesity epidemic in adults

Open Access•NCD Risk Factor Collaboration, Honor Bixby et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2019

Body-mass index (BMI) has increased steadily in most countries in parallel with a rise in the proportion of the population who live in cities 1,2 . This has led to a widely reported view that urbanization is one of the most important drivers of the global rise in obesity 3–6 . Here we use 2,009 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight in more than 112 million adults, to report national, regional and global trends in mean B…

  • Regional differences of macrovascular disease in Northeast and South Germany

Open Access•Violetta Ptushkina, Esther Jacobs et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

This study provides an indication for regional differences in macrovascular disease, which is not explained by traditional risk factors. Further examinations of other risk factors, such as regional deprivation or geographical variations in medical care services are needed

  • Worldwide trends in body-mass index, underweight, overweight, and obesity from 1975 to 2016

    Open Access•Leandra Abarca-Gómez, Ziad Abdeen et al.•ARTICLE•The Lancet•2017

BACKGROUND: Underweight, overweight, and obesity in childhood and adolescence are associated with adverse health consequences throughout the life-course. Our aim was to estimate worldwide trends in mean body-mass index (BMI) and a comprehensive set of BMI categories that cover underweight to obesity in children and adolescents, and to compare trends with those of adults. METHODS: We pooled 2416 population-based studies with measurements of height…

  • Regional differences in the incidence of self-reported type 2 diabetes in Germany

Sabine Schipf, Till Ittermann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2014•Referencias: 28

BACKGROUND: Population-based data are paramount to investigate the long-term course of diabetes, for planning in healthcare and to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of primary prevention. We analysed regional differences in the incidence of self-reported type 2 diabetes mellitus in Germany. METHODS: Data of participants (baseline age 45-74 years) from five regional population-based studies conducted between 1997 and 2010 were included (mean follow-…

  • P2-269 Regional differences in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus

Sabine Schipf, A Werner et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Introduction In Germany, regional data on the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are lacking for use in healthcare planning. We analysed regional differences in the prevalence of T2DM and treatment with antidiabetic agents. Methods Data from five regional population-based studies and the German National Health Interview and Examination Survey (GNHIES98) conducted between 1997 and 2006 were analysed. Estimates of self-reported diabetes,…
