Studying the shrinking and expansion of civil society space in Europe
Various studies have highlighted a worrying trend: many regimes – including established democracies – increasingly adopt legal provisions that curtail civil society organizations’ (CSOs) capacity to survive, operate, and perform key tasks, i.e. provisions that delimit CSOs’ room for manoeuvre or, as we call it, legally defined civil society space. This article presents a new dataset covering annual change in CSO regulation across 12 European coun…
Is AI-Generated Extremism Credible? Experimental Evidence from an Expert Survey
Rapid progress in Artificial Intelligence (AI) over the past few years has unfolded important questions—and triggered anxiety—about the potential (mis)use of AI-generated content in information warfare and disinformation campaigns. A crucial question remains unanswered, however: whether—and to what extent—this technology can be harnessed in a credible way by extremists, whose language is usually characterized by highly specific subcultural regist…
Out of the ivory tower
The relevance and impact of political scientists’ professional activities outside of universities has become the focus of public attention, partly due to growing expectations that research should help address society’s grand challenges. One type of such activity is policy advising. However, little attention has been devoted to understanding the extent and type of policy advising activities political scientists engage in. This paper addresses this…

Conventional and unconventional participation in Latin America
Building on past research, we implement a hierarchical latent class model to analyze political participation from a comparative perspective. Our methodology allows simultaneously: (i) estimating citizens’ propensity to engage in conventional and unconventional modes of participation; (ii) classifying individuals into underlying “types” capturing within- and cross-country variations in participation; and (iii) assessing how this classification var…
Transformational party events and legislative turnover in West European democracies, 1945–2015
This paper examines the influence of party change on party-level legislative turnover. Analyzing a novel dataset tracking 251 parties in eight West European democracies between 1945 and 2015, we assess how transformational party events affect the renewal of parties’ parliamentary delegations. Transformational party events refers to party changes resulting from deliberate strategic decisions that redistribute power within parties, change their ide…
A little justification goes a long way
That governments may not always keep their election promises or that they change policy positions may be unsurprising. However, failed promises, backing down on threats or flip-flopping on policy positions may be associated with a loss in support. Bringing together literature on the politics of electoral promises, policy shifts and audience costs, we examine the conditions under which a political leader can back down on a promise, using the EU re…
Political Party Mortality in Established Party Systems
Existing scholarship offers few answers to fundamental questions about the mortality of political parties in established party systems. Linking party research to the organization literature, we conceptualize two types of party death, dissolution and merger, reflecting distinct theoretical rationales. They underpin a new framework on party organizational mortality theorizing three sets of factors: those shaping mortality generally and those shapin…
Policy-based Abstention
This paper implements a unified model of individual abstention and vote choice, applying it to analyze policy-based alienation and indifference in Brazil’s historical 2002 presidential election. The results indicate that both alienation and indifference have a negative impact on turnout, with indifference contributing slightly more to voter abstention. Also, the determinants of alienation and indifference differ considerably, the former being det…

A General Model of Abstention Under Compulsory Voting
Invalid voting and absenteeism are alternative sources of abstention under compulsory voting. Previous research failed to systematically study the mechanisms behind each form of non-voting and the relationships between them. We develop an analytical framework and an empirical strategy to jointly examine invalid voting and absenteeism in Brazil, the world’s largest democracy with mandatory voting. Using Bayesian inferential methods and analyzing b…

Electoral Competitiveness and Turnout in British Elections, 1964–2010
Analyzing the British Election Study from 1964 to 2010, we examine the influence of electoral context on turnout, focusing on the closeness of elections in terms of lagged seat and constituency-level winning margins. Using cross-classified multilevel models to account for individual and contextual factors and disentangle life cycle, cohort- and election-specific effects, we find that closeness strongly affects voting behavior, particularly among …

The Dynamics of Political Support in Emerging Democracies
Scholars have argued that adherence to regime principles in emerging democracies can be threatened by the political system’s inability to respond to critical events like natural disasters. However, little is known about the dynamics of the causal relationship between system performance and system support. This paper examines the time-varying effects of the 2007 Ica earthquake in Peru on political support. The authors find that, in the short run, …
The Impact of New Technologies on Voter Confidence in Latin America
We analyze trust in electronic voting in Latin America using data from two field experiments conducted in Argentina and Colombia. We find that voters generally exhibit high levels of confidence in e-voting, although this depends on individual characteristics such as age and education, as well as on the particular type of technology used. We contrast our findings with those from industrialized democracies and show that conclusions derived from Ame…

Modeling Electoral Coordination
During each electoral period, the strategic interaction between voters and political elites determines the number of viable candidates in a district. In this paper, we implement a hierarchical seemingly unrelated regression model to explain electoral coordination at the district level in Uruguay as a function of district magnitude, previous electoral outcomes and electoral regime. Elections in this country are particularly useful to test for inst…
Correcting for Survey Misreports Using Auxiliary Information with an Application to Estimating Turnout
Misreporting is a problem that plagues researchers who use survey data. In this article, we develop a parametric model that corrects for misclassified binary responses using information on the misreporting patterns obtained from auxiliary data sources. The model is implemented within the Bayesian framework via Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods and can be easily extended to address other problems exhibited by survey data, such as missing res…

Male Genital Self-Mutilation in the Context of Religious Belief
The objective of this article is to draw attention to the phenomenon of self-mutilation ‘sanctioned ’ by religious belief. Jerusalem, the center of the world’s monotheist religions, is a powerful magnet, calling believers to come and there, perform certain prescribed actions. Witztum and Kalian
