A Reader on the Sanskrit Grammarians
The achievements of Pānini and the Indian grammarians, beginning nearly 2500 years ago, have never been fully appreciated by Western scholars--partly because of the great technical difficulties presented by such an inquiry, and partly because relevant tutorial articles have been confined to obscure and inaccessible publications. This book makes available to linguists and Sanskritists a collection of the most important articles on the Sanskrit gram…

Sanskrit and Sanskritization
Language, culture, and society can be studied from various points of view. Classical Indology and Indian anthropology have different points of departure, but deal sometimes with the same material; the difference in background has generally prevented close collaboration. Classical Indologists tend to look upon Indian anthropologists as mainly interested in almost inaccessible hill tribes, in village superstition, and sometimes in contemporary affa…
A Method of Linguistic Description
It is well known that the earliest and probably best descriptive grammar in existence is the Sanskrit grammar of Pāṇini (?350 b.c .). The subject of the following essay is Pāṇini's phonological analysis of the Sanskrit consonants. This illustrates some of the more important techniques used by Pāṇini and his colleagues. It also enables us to reconstruct some of the methods by means of which Pāṇini constructed his grammar

Negation and the Law of Contradiction in Indian Thought
In the fourth chapter of book of the Metaphysica Aristotle deals with the principle of contradiction. This law is formulated as follows: 'it is impossible for anything at the same time to be and not to be'. Let us imagine, says Aristotle, that somebody wished to oppose this view. Our opponent cannot hold a view which contradicts the law of contradiction without assuming the validity of this law itself: for otherwise he is not even denying what we…

Correlations Between Language and Logic in Indian Thought
It may be possible to study special cases of the general philosophical problem, how language and thought are correlated, by considering definite thought structures and definite languages. The difficulty, that thought seems to be accessible only or at least primarily through language, can be partly avoided by concentrating upon formal expressions of thought structures which are considerably different from ordinary language. In the following an att…
