The importance of outdoor space
Background: The concept of children’s well-being is central to international child health agendas. Acquiring relevant cognitive and social-emotional skills during the formative years is key to shaping future mental health and preparing societies to be prosperous, sustainable and inclusive. Schools are ideally placed to foster a culture of well-being in addition to education, particularly as children refine their emotional skills during this stage…

Indoor play during a global pandemic
The first case of a novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was diagnosed in Wuhan, China, in December 2019 and the outbreak was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 11 March 2020. By the end of March 2020, 136 countries had positive COVID-19 cases. Meanwhile, in response to the virus, countries instigated various forms of 'lock-downs' and social distancing measures. Globally, children and adolescents could not meet and play…
Snails, Water in a Stone, and Holy Wells
The Schools’ Scheme was a systematic national survey of folklore conducted in the Republic of Ireland in 1937–38 and is now part of the National Folklore Collection (NFC) at University College Dublin. Medical folklore and the curative powers of holy wells were prominent in the Schools’ Scheme, and in the ensuing Schools’ Collection (NFCS). A representative sample of cures from the NFCS was examined in this study, which included a total of 6,843 s…

They are united, however, in their adoption of a rights-based perspective. The UNCRC and UNCRPD emphasise the right to play for children with disabilities. Play is vital…
I had no credit to ring you back
The monitoring of children in time and space, from a distance via the mobile phones, is a phenomenon never experienced in previous generations. Indeed, as frequently recited, the increased protection of children by monitoring them is a central characteristic of modern childhood (Rasmussen, 2003; Qvortrup, 1993) and the effects of this are not yet know. Equally our understanding of how children in middle childhood (8 – 12 years) negotiate and or r…
Physical activity play in local housing estates and child wellness in Ireland
Much of children's play involves physical activity, such as chasing games (Barron, 2011 Barron, C. (2011). Fun is a serious business: ‘Sameness’ and ‘difference’ in the play spaces, play activities and toys of Irish children in middle childhood (Unpublished PhD thesis). National University of Ireland, Maynooth. [Google Scholar]) and climbing (Smith, 2010 Smith, P. K. (2010). Children and play. Oxford: Wiley-Blackwell. [Google Scholar]). Despite t…
