  • The Heart and Its Attitudes

Olga Bailey, Olivia Bailey•ARTICLE•The Philosophical Review•2025

Stephen Darwall has had a change of heart. He remains committed to the Strawsonian analysis of moral accountability and obligation memorably articulated in The Second-Personal Standpoint (2006). Still, The Heart and Its Attitudes reflects the growth of a new conviction: in focusing narrowly on ‘reactive attitudes of the will’ (resentment, guilt, blame) and their contributions to deontic morality, philosophers have failed to properly reckon with t…

  • Empathy, extremism, and epistemic autonomy

    Olga Bailey, Olivia Bailey•ARTICLE•Philosophical Explorations•2024

Are extremists (incels, neo-nazis, and the like) characteristically answerable for their moral and political convictions? Is it necessary to offer them reasoned arguments against their views, or is it instead appropriate to bypass that kind of engagement? Discussion of these questions has centered around the putative epistemic autonomy of extremists. The parties to this discussion have assumed that epistemic autonomy is solely (or at least primar…

  • What must be lost

    Open Access•Olga Bailey•ARTICLE•Synthese•2023•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 37

A sensibility is, on a rough first pass, an emotional orientation to the world. It shapes how things appear to us, evaluatively speaking. By transfiguring things’ evaluative appearances, a change in sensibility can profoundly alter one’s overall experience of the world. I argue that some forms of sensibility change entail (1) risking one’s knowledge of what experiences imbued with one’s prior sensibility were like, and (2) surrendering one’s gras…

  • Processes of legitimization in contemporary Art

    Pablo Navazo-Ostúa, Eva Aladro-Vico et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for Cultural Research•2021

The Young British Artists (YBAs) was a generation that incorporated elements from media, advertising and cultural industry into the art world in the late 20th century. Based on a case study of the group and the distinctive phases of its meteoric trajectory, we analyse the circumstances and agents involved in the processes of legitimisation in contemporary art. As an instrumental tool, we use the model presented by Alan Bowness in his publication,…

  • Empathy and the Value of Humane Understanding

    Open Access•Olga Bailey, Olivia Bailey•ARTICLE•Philosophy and Phenomenological…•2020•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 2

Empathy is a form of emotionally charged imaginative perspective‐taking. It is also the unique source of a particular form of understanding, which I will call humane understanding. Humane understanding consists in the direct apprehension of the intelligibility of others’ emotions. This apprehension is an epistemic good whose ethical significance is multifarious. In this paper, I focus on elaborating the sense in which humane understanding of othe…

  • Artivism

Open Access•Eva Aladro Vico, Dimitrina Jivkova Semova et al.•ARTICLE•Comunicar•2018•Citada por: 13•Referencias: 4

This study describes the concepts, historical precedents, language and fundamental experiences of artivism. It shows the research activities from two main universities (Complutense de Madrid in Spain and Nottingham Trent in UK) as well as other cultural institutions (Élan Interculturel from France and Artemiszio from Hungary), which have explored the educational potential of artivism as a new way of achieving social engagement using innovation an…

  • Framing Revolution and Re-Framing Counter-Revolution

    Jairo Lugo-Ocando, Olga Bailey et al.•ARTICLE•Journalism Practice•2011•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 2

The end of the 1990s marked the rise of left-wing governments in Latin America. Hugo Chávez in Venezuela, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brazil, Néstor Kirchner in Argentina, Evo Morales in Bolivia, among others, swept into power, in most cases in landslide victories at the polls, only to encounter almost immediately afterwards a forceful opposition from the mainstream and privately owned commercial news media. Evidence of this can be seen in the a…

  • What Knowledge Is Necessary for Virtue

Open Access•Olga Bailey, Olivia Bailey•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethics and Social…•2010

Critics contend that Aristotelianism demands too much of the virtuous person in the way of knowledge to be credible. This general charge is usually directed against either of two of Aristotelianism’s apparent claims about the necessary conditions for the possession of a single virtue, namely that (1) one must know what all the other virtues require, and (2) one must also be the master of a preternatural range of technical/empirical knowledge. I a…

  • Transnational lives and the media

Myria Georgiou, Olga Bailey et al.•BOOK•Transnational Lives and the Media•2007

This collection is a timely and exciting attempt to understand recent changes in the relations between diaspora and media cultures. At its heart is the recognition that contemporary diasporas present us with profound transformation, with a shift from the traditional political formations and identities characterising diasporic communities, to ways in which communities learn to engage with the new 'Other'
