  • What Does It Mean to Say, of ‘Thoughts’, That They ‘ Used to Count as Expressing the Essentialities of Things’? Hegel and the Older Metaphysics

    Open Access•Richard Dunphy, Robb Dunphy•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

This essay is concerned with a passage from 24 of Hegel's Encyclopaedia, in which Hegel characterises the concepts or 'thoughts' developed in the discipline of metaphysics by saying that they 'used to count as expressing the essentialities of things'.I begin by drawing attention to Hegel's use of the past tense in this passage and suggest that it looks problematic for conceptual realist interpreters of Hegel's idealism, who want, roughly, to attr…

  • Introduction

    Open Access•Richard Dunphy•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

In this introduction to a special issue on work on metametaphysical topics in the context of classical German philosophy, I make a brief case for thinking that contemporary philosophers who are interested in meta-level questions about metaphysics have good reason to take an interest in work on Kant and the German Idealists, of the kind subsequently showcased in the various contributions to this issue. I follow this with brief summaries of the con…

    Open Access•Richard Dunphy•ARTICLE•Philosophy Compass•2023•Referencias: 19

This article discusses two topics, both commonly referred to using the label "the beginning of Hegel'sLogic": (1) Hegel's justification for the claim that a science of logic must begin by considering the concept of "pure being". (2) Hegel's discussion of the concepts "being", "nothing", and "becoming" in the first chapter of hisLogic. Discussing recent work on both of these topics, two primary claims are defended: Regarding (1): the strongest int…

  • Hegel and the Problem of Beginning

    Open Access•Richard Dunphy, Robb Dunphy•ARTICLE•Hegel Bulletin•2021

In this article I develop an interpretation of the opening passages of Hegel's essay ‘With what must the beginning of science be made?’ I suggest firstly that Hegel is engaging there with a distinctive problem, the overcoming of which he understands to be necessary in order to guarantee the scientific character of the derivation of the fundamental categories of thought which he undertakes in the Science of Logic . I refer to this as ‘the problem …

  • Beyond Nationalism? The Anti-Austerity Social Movement in Ireland

    Richard Dunphy•ARTICLE•Journal of Civil Society•2017•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 5

The European financial crisis has inspired a wave of social activism, challenging established party politics. In Ireland, a large social protest movement produced a Right2Change political campaign in 2015 that confronted the right-wing consensus in Irish politics. Some activists sought to emulate and learn from the example of new parties like Spain’s Podemos. Yet, to date, the traditional party structure remains intact, and hopes of emulating the…

  • The radical left in coalition government

    Open Access•Richard Dunphy, Tim Bale•ARTICLE•Party Politics•2011•Citada por: 55•Referencias: 13

This article raises questions about how best to assess the performance of radical left parties participating in coalition governments. Drawing in part on interviews (see Appendix 1), it covers parties that have participated in coalition government (Cyprus, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Norway), or have acted as ‘support parties’ (Denmark, Sweden), or are debating the ‘pros and cons’ of coalition participation (Netherlands). It undertakes a com…

    Open Access•Richard Dunphy, Tim Bale•ARTICLE•Party Politics•2007•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 9

Unless they have been content to remain defiantly on the oppositional fringe, or transform themselves into supporters of market economics, few of Europe's communist parties, west or east, have found it easy to adapt to the collapse of `actually existing socialism'. This is especially true of those that have not played down their past. This article looks at one exception, the Cypriot party, AKEL, which has managed to modernize policy, improve its …

  • A group of individuals trying to do their best

    Richard Dunphy•ARTICLE•Irish Political Studies•1998•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 2

Six years after its foundation the Democratic Left was struggling to find a role for itself in Irish politics. An extremely disappointing result in the general elections of 1997, despite what was generally perceived to be an effective and impressive performance by its ministers in the rainbow coalition government, has left the party in a state of shock and disorientation. The continued existence of the party has been called into question. This ar…

  • The Effect Of Parliamentary Lobbying On Scottish MPs In The Age Of Consent Debate

    Open Access•Ian Clark, Richard Dunphy•ARTICLE•Scottish Affairs•1995

On 21 February 1994 the House of Commons voted to reduce the age of consent for gay men from 21 to 18 years, having earlier rejected a proposal which would have equalised the age of consent for all at 16 years. These votes followed months of intensive lobbying of Members of Parliament by lesbian and gay rights groups, much of which was widely praised by press commentators and politicians for its professionalism and efficiency. Utilising returns f…

  • The Making of Fianna Fáil Power in Ireland 1923–1948

Richard Dunphy•BOOK•The making of Fianna Fáil power…•1995•Citada por: 30

This is the first major examination of the origins and development of the highly influential Fianna Fail party in Irish politics. Richard Dunphy explores the historical development of the party, looking at its organizational structure, the evolution of its ideology, and the interactions between party and state, and analyses how the changing social structure of Ireland affected Fianna Fail policies. The result is a fascinating mixture of detailed …

    Richard Dunphy•ARTICLE•Irish Political Studies•1992•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 2

The Irish left was initially hostile to the process of European integration, campaigning against European Community (EC) membership in the 1972 referendum. The Labour Party has long since abandoned this position. More recently, the Workers’ Party, which entered the European Parliament after the 1989 elections, has radically reassessed its European policy. The emergence of a pro-EC stance reflects the overwhelming consensus on the issue in Ireland…
