An Integrated Regional Pediatric Asthma Program
Asthma is a leading cause of chronic illness and school absenteeism in the United States and asthma-related health inequities persist. Innovative cross-sector interventions are needed to address inequities in pediatric asthma, yet few exist. This article describes a regional pediatric asthma program that uses an integrated case management model of care. Beyond the First Trimester
Social determinants of health have been used to explore associations with pregnancy outcomes and the birth weight of infants; however, research employing individually based social risk measures has not examined associations among underserved populations, including pregnant persons at community health centers. Data were collected from a sample (n = 345) of pregnant persons who sought care at a community health center between January 2019 and Decem…

The Medical University of South Carolina Community Engaged Scholars Program provides community-based participatory research training and seed funding for projects to improve health in South Carolina. Pregnancy-Specific Stress and Racial Discrimination Among U.S. Women
Associations Between Social Determinants of Health and Adolescent Contraceptive Use
This research assessed social determinants of contraceptive use among a nationally representative sample of adolescents. This study analyzed nationally representative, publicly available data from the 2013-2015 National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG). The sample consisted of sexually active males and females between the ages of 15 and 19 (n = 775). Independent variables were social determinant questions asked on the NSFG, selected based on the He…
Community service learning in the teen outreach program in non-metropolitan florida high schools
Engagement of adolescents with their communities has been associated with lower rates of adolescent pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to qualitatively analyze Community Service Learning activities in the Teen Outreach Program (TOP) on a variety of dimensions. Data analyzed included CSL records submitted by TOP facilitators during the 2014–2015 school year implementation of TOP in non-metropolitan high schools in a Southeastern US state. CS…
The relationship between parent–young adult religious concord and depression
The study’s purpose was to evaluate the relationship between depressive symptoms in emerging adults (ages 18–24) and religious concordance/discordance with their parents (n = 161 dyads). Online surveys were distributed to young adults and a corresponding parent, evaluating religiosity, depressive symptoms (young adults only), and demographics. Regarding depressive symptoms among surveyed young adults, concordance for non-organizational religiosit…
Associations Between Depressive Symptoms and Religiosity in Young Adults
High-risk adolescents’ sexuality education preferences based on Hispanic ethnicity
In the USA, persons of Hispanic ethnicity experience higher rates of adolescent pregnancy and STIs than non-Hispanic white youth and there exists a lack of research concerning the sexuality education preferences of Hispanic adolescents. This study describes sexual health education preferences by Hispanic ethnicity among a high-risk sample of young people aged 14–20 years in Texas. Data were collected from participants in a teenage pregnancy preve…
Gestational Women’s Perceptions About the Harms of Cigarette and E-Cigarette Use During Pregnancy
Social Determinants of Health and Health Disparities
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in the United States provides yet another example of the enduring and pernicious effect of social determinants of health (SDH) on African American communities. SDH, as defined by the Healthy People 2020 SDH framework, include domains of economic stability, education, social and community context, health and health care, and neighborhood and built environment.1 Within each domain, key areas represen…
Utilizing Social Determinants of Health to Elicit Perceived Control Beliefs About Physical Activity Among African Americans
Modifiable Risk Factors and Readiness to Change among Homeless Adults

A secondary aim was to examine the relationship between self-rated health and readiness to change. Methods: We examined readiness to change using "lad…
Current Age, Age at First Sex, Age at First Homelessness, and HIV Risk Perceptions Predict Sexual Risk Behaviors among Sexually Active Homeless Adults
While HIV disproportionately impacts homeless individuals, little is known about the prevalence of HIV risk behaviors in the southwest and how age factors and HIV risk perceptions influence sexual risk behaviors. We conducted a secondary data analysis ( n = 460) on sexually active homeless adults from a cross-sectional study of participants ( n = 610) recruited from homeless service locations, such as shelters and drop-in centers, in an understud…
HPV Awareness, Knowledge and Vaccination Attitudes among Church-going African-American Women
Knowledge that HPV causes multiple cancers is important to willingness to vaccinate a child. Education campaigns should emphasize that HPV is also related to non-cervical cancers. African-American women of older age and less education might benefit from church-based HPV educational campaigns
Utilizing a Social Determinant of Health Framework as Determinants of Perceived Behavioral Control
Health disparities reflect inequalities in health outcomes among different populations. As a planning tool for researchers and practitioners to address health disparities, multiple frameworks utilizing social determinants of health have been proposed. Perceived behavioral control, a construct within the Integrative Behavioral Model, reflects how much control one feels over a health behavior and how easy or difficult the behavior is to enact under…
How Florida youths measure up to US youths in sexual and reproductive health

Projections have placed Florida to have the second largest population of youths in the nation by 2025. The racial and ethnic diversity as well as a growing number of youths in Florida make sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes in this state reflective of the increasing diversity of…
