Multi-proxy investigation of a unique Bronze Age deposit of broomcorn millet and human remains at a bog site in Bohemia, Czech Republic
Paths to this and the next world
The article presents the assemblage of finds from a sunken hut in Nižbor opposite the Stradonice oppidum on the other bank of the Berounka River. The inventory from the sunken hut, which testifies to its contemporaneity with one of the phases of settlement at the oppidum in the Late La Tène period, was composed of common settlement finds of pottery and animal bones but also the skeletal remains of an older male. As such, it is a source for the st…

Did they leave or not
One of the key unresolved questions regarding the archaeology of La Tène Europe concerns the continuity of settlement around 400 BC. Archaeological evidence of settlement in the countries north of the Alps, including the Czech Republic, declines during this period – a decline which for decades has generally been attributed to population migration. Demographic growth, climate deterioration, land depletion, disease, and social crisis have all been …
Long time-series ecological niche modelling using archaeological settlement data
Human activities have shaped the environment since long before the advent of agriculture and resulted in anthropogenic landscapes, which are sometimes perceived as natural, but are clearly shaped by dozens of previous generations. This study is the first to apply ecological niche modelling on a long time-series of archaeological data to illuminate the development of the landscape from the perspective of settlement behaviour and its dependence on …
New AMS 14C dates track the arrival and spread of broomcorn millet cultivation and agricultural change in prehistoric Europe
Broomcorn millet ( Panicum miliaceum L.) is not one of the founder crops domesticated in Southwest Asia in the early Holocene, but was domesticated in northeast China by 6000 bc . In Europe, millet was reported in Early Neolithic contexts formed by 6000 bc , but recent radiocarbon dating of a dozen 'early' grains cast doubt on these claims. Archaeobotanical evidence reveals that millet was common in Europe from the 2nd millennium bc , when major …

The contamination of archaeological find assemblages at multi-period (and other) sites can sometimes go undetected. In this article we seek to highlight this problem through analysis of the fill of settlement features from a site at Rakovice, South Bohemia, Czech Republic. After a detailed spatial evaluation of different categories of finds, an analysis of plant macroremains, and radiocarbon dating, what had originally appeared to be a clear-cut …
The prehistory and early history of the Šumava Mountains (Czech Republic) as seen through anthropogenic pollen indicators and charcoal data
In the lower forested mountain ranges of Europe, human impact on nature is usually confined to the written history of the Middle Ages. Our research in the Šumava mountains aims to specify the nature and intensity of human impact on vegetation, especially during agricultural prehistory. We use results from a multidisciplinary study of the unique La Tène archaeological site in the Sklářské Valley (elevation 802 m a.s.l.) and from a pollen and charc…
At the end of the world? Settlement in the Šumava mountains and foothills in later prehistory
The aim of this paper is to explore and define the boundary of the zone of inland, mainly agricultural settlement in southern and western Bohemia, Czech Republic in the later prehistory, and to try to determine why such settlement appears not to have spread further into the Šumava foothills and mountains. With the help of predictive MaxEnt modelling – used in ecology to determine the degree of uncertainty in the geographic distribution of species…

Pravěké osídlení, půdy a zemědělské strategie

Human Response to Potential Robust Climate Change around 5500 cal BP in the Territory of Bohemia (the Czech Republic)
Recent research on the environmental setting of more than 3,000 Neolithic/Eneolithic sites, and of spatial distribution and shifts of various Eneolithic cultural groups, has revealed significant changes in the first half of the 4th millennium BC. A substantial reduction in traces of settlement activities and diminution of settlement territory is apparent. There is a shift from extremely good, but environmentally varied, conditions towards the uni…

Archaeobotanical Database of the Czech Republic, an Interim Report
archaeobotanical research in the czech republic has generated enormous quantities of unique, but non-uniform, data that are currently stored in disparate hard copy and electronic formats. a consortium of archaeological organisations has initiated the archaeobotanical database of the czech republic (CZAD) to facilitate data storage, access and quality. CZAD is being developed under the auspices of the ArboDat Project, by the Institute of Archaeolo…
An early medieval symbol carved on a tree trunk
The chance discovery of a carved symbol on a waterlogged tree of the six-ninth century AD may be the earliest mark on a living tree that has so far come to light. Given its rarity, an obvious interpretation remains elusive, but the authors review a wide range of possibilities from analogies ancient and modern. Symbols on trees have been used to mark trails, the ownership of land and resources, and all manner of votive moments from superstitious s…
