Online presentation of the digital reconstruction process of a megalithic tomb
A recommendation of: Tharandt, Louise 3Duewelsteene - A website for the 3D visualization of the megalithic passage grave Düwelsteene near Heiden in Westphalia, Germany https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7948379
Evaluating Methods for Reducing Sampling Bias in Network Analysis
This study aims to investigate the dynamics of obsidian trade networks during the Jomon period (approximately 15,000 to 2,400 years ago), the hunting and gathering era in Japan. To improve regional representation and reduce the distortions caused by small sample sizes, we performed clustering based on a large-scale dataset and conducted social network analysis. The research results revealed that the trade networks during the Jomon period were not…
Sharing Research Code in Archaeology
In this paper we trace the development of an R-package starting with the adaptation of code from a different field, via scripts shared between colleagues, to a published package that is being successfully used by researchers world-wide. Our aim is to encourage researchers to prepare their custom analysis code in a way that is useful and easily reusable for others
Rosegate Projectile Points in the Fremont Region
The Fremont projectile point typology was developed in the 1980s. An early revision combined the Rose Spring Corner-notched and Eastgate Expanding-stem types into a combined Rosegate type with an end date of 900-1000 AD. Some archaeologists recognize that these projectile points persist to approximately 1300 AD but others use the earlier dates. Furthermore, there is a varied approach to these types. Some use the original two types, while others u…

Ceramic Production and Exchange among the Virgin Anasazi, 30 Years Later
At the 1988 SAA annual meeting in Phoenix, Margaret Lyneis presented a paper with the title Ceramic Production and Exchange among the Virgin Anasazi. In that paper, she presented evidence that much of the pottery found on archaeological sites in the Moapa Valley of southeastern Nevada was in fact produced 70–100 km to the east. This pottery was made from distinctive raw materials found near the north rim of the western Grand Canyon. That 1988 SAA…
New Findings from the Far Western Puebloan Region
This special issue of the Kiva is published in honor of Margaret Lyneis, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 78, after a long and influential career as a teacher and scholar. These papers developed out of a session presented at the 83rd annual meeting of Society for American Archaeology (SAA), held in Washington, D.C. in 2018. Collectively, the papers provide a snapshot of current findings from the Virgin Branch Puebloan region, also referred t…

Examining the Production and Distribution of Shivwits Ware Pottery in the American Southwest
Compositional analyses were undertaken to evaluate the hypothesis that Shivwits Ware pottery found in southern Nevada was not produced in that area but, instead, manufactured on the Shivwits Plateau. The evidence supports this hypothesis and indicates that large quantities of Shivwits Ware jars moved through a distribution system linking the upland areas of the western Arizona Strip with the lowlands of southeastern Nevada. This long-distance mov…

Archaeology and Archaeobotany of Southern Paiute Horticulture in the St. George Basin, Southwestern Utah
Although ethnographic descriptions of the Southern Paiute usually portray them as hunter-gatherers who only dabbled with farming, historic records demonstrate that Paiutes were growing maize prior to the arrival of the first Spanish explorers. These records further suggest that in the St. George Basin of southwestern Utah, Southern Paiute farming was relatively intensive in the decades before the arrival of Mormon settlers. Numerous Late Prehisto…
Surface Archaeology of the Red Knobs Site, a Southeastern Utah Great House
Red Knobs is a large Anasazi site in southeastern Utah. It was a community center twice-first around AD. 900, then again in the early to mid-llOOs. The later occupation incorporated some of the architectural symbolism associated with Chacoan great houses, including a great kiva and a prehistoric road. Other characteristics, including having been built on top of an earlier community center, seem symbolic but are not dearly Chacoan. Also, ceramics …
Production of San Juan Red Ware in the Northern Southwest
San Juan Red ware pottery was distributed across the northern Southwest from the eighth through tenth centuries A.D., though made only in the northern San Juan region. This paper investigates the concentration (Costin 1991) of San Juan Red ware production through neutron activation analysis of the pottery and raw materials. Production was concentrated in the area of southeast Utah, and within that area it appears to have been produced at only a l…
