The Proposal Preparation Program
This article describes the University of Minnesota Medical School Proposal Preparation Program (P3). P3 is designed to develop grant-writing skills for assistant professors preparing their first K- or R-series application to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Three 4-month P3 cycles are conducted annually. For each cycle, a cohort of around 10 assistant professor participants and 5 regular faculty mentors meet for ten ~2-hour group sessions…
Transcendental meditation for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder
TM appears to be an acceptable and effective treatment for veterans with PTSD that warrants further study regarding specific outcomes and beneficial changes in brain function. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved)
Methylation of FKBP5 and SLC6A4 in Relation to Treatment Response to Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an effective non-pharmacologic treatment for veterans with PTSD. Extensive work has identified epigenetic factors related to PTSD disease risk and pathophysiology, but how these factors influence treatment response is unclear. Serotonin signaling and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis functioning may be perturbed in PTSD and are molecular pathways targeted by PTSD treatments. To identify potenti…

Effect of Paroxetine on Physiological Response to Stress and Smoking
OBJECTIVE: Smokers often smoke during stressful events, which leads to large increases in cardiovascular measures such as blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR). Because exaggerated cardiovascular response to stress is associated with cardiovascular disease risk, this study examined paroxetine's effect on the physiological response to combining stress and smoking. METHODS: Sixty-two participants completed this randomized, double-blind, crossover…

Psychiatrists’ attitudes and practices regarding the moral worries of their patients
The 2004 presidential election process highlighted the relevance to the American public of the moral character of each candidate. Recent works in psychology and philosophy have enlarged our understanding of the moral emotions, especially guilt, shame, regret, and remorse, and the centrality of a sense of moral concern in defining personal identity. A previous study demonstrated that patients report a moderate degree of worry about moral issues in…

Lifetime Prevalence of Pathological Gambling Among American Indian and Hispanic American Veterans
Objectives. We examined the prevalence and clinical correlates of pathological gambling among 1228 American Indian and Hispanic American veterans in the southwest and north central regions of the United States. Methods. We surveyed a community sample of American Indian and Hispanic American veterans to obtain data on psychiatric disorder and treatment. Results. American Indian veterans had a 10% lifetime prevalence of pathological gambling. The H…
Perceived Barriers to VA Mental Health Care Among Upper Midwest American Indian Veterans
OBJECTIVES: This community-based study was undertaken to understand why Native-American veterans in the Upper Midwest choose not to use VA mental health services despite high rates of certain psychiatric disorders. RESEARCH DESIGN: A sample consisting of 543 Native-American veterans was obtained using a focused-intensive nonprobability sampling method, structured to over-sample urban and female veterans. Data sources included (1) interview (ie, a…
Perceived Barriers to Mental Health Care for American Indian and Hispanic Veterans
This study aimed to identify perceived barriers that might prevent American Indian (AI) and Hispanic American (HA) veterans from seeking mental health services at U.S. Veterans Administration Medical Centers (VAMCs), as reported by 100 VA mental-behavioral health staff members. A total of 100 volunteer mental-behavioral health workers were questioned, 50 from Albuquerque VAMC and 50 from Minneapolis VAMC. Participants responded to public announce…
Attachment style classification and posttraumatic stress disorder in former prisoners of war
Adult attachment style and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology were investigated in 107 former prisoner of war veterans. Those with secure attachment styles scored significantly lower on measures of PTSD than did those with insecure styles, and attachment style was a stronger predictor of PTSD symptom intensity than was trauma severity. The suggested association between attachment style and PTSD's development and persistence are …
