Chronic Psychiatric Patients in Nigeria
Patients receiving treatment at the Lantoro long-stay psychiatric institution, Abeokuta, Nigeria were divided into two groups (short and long-stay) according to their duration of stay. The two were compared for factors that could be responsible for patients staying more than six months. In Nigeria today, as in many other African countries, traditional healing practices exist side by side with modern medical practice (Lambo, 1959 and 1961; Lucas and Hendrickse, 1966; Harding, 1973; Ademuwagun, 1976).
