Radiocarbon dating opens up new frontiers in the study of tree longevity
Long-lived trees support biodiversity at multiple scales, maintain ecosystem functionality, serve as natural archives, and hold cultural and aesthetic value. Despite their importance, the maximum longevity of many tree species remains poorly understood, limiting the design of effective conservation strategies. Challenges in obtaining reliable tree ages are commonly represented by natural wood decay, sampling obstacles, and indistinct or absent an…
Radiocarbon dating of a monumental dragon tree ( Dracaena draco (L.) L.)
Some arboreal monocotyledons, such as the dragon trees ( Dracaena sp.), can develop impressive trunks (>5 m perimeter) through a lateral meristem, but their ages are difficult to determine. We report here a series of calibrated radiocarbon ( 14 C) dates obtained from a stem section of Dracaena draco (L.) L. subsp. draco growing on the island of Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. This radial section, about 40 cm long, was cut on October 18, 2023, fr…
Fire History of an Old-Growth Ponderosa Pine Stand in the Sheep Range, Desert National Wildlife Refuge, Nevada, Usa
Southwestern ponderosa pine forests have experienced reduced fire frequency since Euro-American settlement generally because of successful fire suppression policies. We report here on the fire history of a ponderosa pine stand located in the Sheep Range, which is part of the Desert National Wildlife Refuge, in the Mojave Desert. A total of 22 dominant, fire-scarred ponderosa pines were sampled by taking 29 partial cross-sections and 18 wood incre…
Identifying the 993–994 CE Miyake Event in the Oldest Dated Living Tree in Europe
Combined dendrochronology and accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14 C) dating analyses were used in order to date an old living tree named Italus , growing in the Pollino massif in Southern Italy. Wiggle match AMS 14 C dating analysis was performed on a 320-yr-long floating chronology obtained by cross-dating four wood cores extracted from the exposed roots of the tree. Following this approach, an age for the tree of ≈1230 yr was esti…

A Weights-of-Evidence Model for Mapping the Probability of Fire Occurrence in Lincoln County, Nevada
Wildfire is a dynamic ecological process with spatial patterns that reflect multiple influences on fire occurrence and spread. We used weights of evidence techniques to model spatial patterns of wildfire occurrence in relation to landscape-scale drivers of fire in the southern Great Basin. Weights of evidence is a quantitative, data-driven, Bayesian modeling method that can be applied to spatial data for producing maps of expected probability of …
A Theory-Driven Approach to Tree-Ring Standardization
One of the main elements of dendrochronological standardization is removing the biological trend, i.e. the progressive decline of ring width along a cross-sectional radius that is caused by the corresponding increase in stem size and tree age over time. The “conservative” option for removing this biological trend is to fit a modified negative exponential curve (or a straight line with slope ≤ 0) to the ring-width measurements. This method is base…
A watershed modeling approach to streamflow reconstruction from tree-ring records
In the abstract, the correlation listed in the last sentence is incorrect. The correct value is >0.9
A watershed modeling approach to streamflow reconstruction from tree-ring records
Insight into long-term changes of streamflow is critical for addressing implications of global warming for sustainable water management. To date, dendrohydrologists have employed sophisticated regression techniques to extend runoff records, but this empirical approach cannot directly test the influence of watershed factors that alter streamflow independently of climate. We designed a mechanistic watershed model to calculate streamflows at annual …
Radiocarbon Analysis Confirms the Annual Nature of Sagebrush Growth Rings
In the Great Basin of North America, big sagebrush ( Artemisia tridentata Nutt.) growth rings can be used to reconstruct environmental changes with annual resolution in areas where there is otherwise little such information available. We tested the annual nature of big sagebrush wood layers using accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dating. Four cross-sections from 3 sagebrush plants were collected near Ely, Nevada, USA, and analyzed u…
Tree growth response to the 1913 eruption of Volcán de Fuego de Colima, Mexico
The impact of volcanic eruptions on forest ecosystems can be investigated using dendrochronological records. While long-range effects are usually mediated by decreased air temperatures, resulting in frost rings or reduced maximum latewood density, local effects include abrupt suppression of radial growth, occasionally followed by greater than normal growth rates. Annual rings in Mexican mountain pine ( Pinus hartwegii Lindl.) on Nevado de Colima,…
A 400-year Tree-ring Chronology from the Tropical Treeline of North America
High-elevation sites in the tropics may be particularly sensitive to rapid climate change. By sampling treeline populations, I have developed the first extensive (> 300 years) tree-ring chronology in tropical North America. The site is Nevado de Colima, at the western end of the Mexican Neovolcanic Belt, and the species studied is Mexican mountain pine (Pinus hartwegii). Despite past logging in the area, 300 to 500-year old pines were found at 36…

Radiocarbon Analysis of Pinus Lagunae Tree Rings
A promising species for tropical dendrochronology is Pinus lagunae , a pine tree found in Baja California Sur (Mexico) around lat 23.5°N. In 1995, we sampled a total of 27 wood cores from 13 Pinus lagunae trees in Sierra La Victoria (23°36'N, 109°56'W), just north of Sierra La Laguna, at an elevation of 1500–1600 m. Selected trees were locally dominant, but their ring-width patterns could not be crossdated. To test the hypothesis that visible gro…
