A mixed methods feasibility and acceptability study to test a brief nature-based intervention to improve university students’ mental wellbeing
A novel nature-based intervention (NBI) to improve wellbeing was evaluated. • Focus groups found benefits including improved cognitive functioning. • Students reported improved wellbeing and nature relationships after the NBI. • Students self-reported better sleep, reduced rumination and stress. • The NBI is feasible and acceptable, and a fully-powered trial is now needed. The adolescent mental health crisis is well documented, with mental health…
Nature-Based Guided Imagery and Meditation Significantly Enhance Mental Well-Being and Reduce Depressive Symptoms
Mental health difficulties are highly prevalent and costly, and mental health services are often overwhelmed. Brief and cost-effective interventions are needed to help improve mental well-being. We aimed to test the effect of a nature-based guided imagery (GI) and a nature-based meditation (NBM) on mental well-being and a range of clinically relevant measures over a 2-week period, including three time points. The community sample included 40 indi…
Surveillance capitalism and the surveillance state
What is the connection between mass surveillance and institutions of individual agency, freedom, and self-governance? Recent literature on “surveillance capitalism” argues that, over the past two decades, the capitalist Big Tech companies have commodified personal data for profit. This commodification goes beyond gathering information to improve the products provided by the collecting organization directly and entails using data to predict what p…
Mental Health and Wellbeing in Young People in the UK during Lockdown (Covid-19)
This study aimed to assess the levels of mental wellbeing and potential for clinical need in a sample of UK university students aged 18–25 during the COVID-19 pandemic. We also tested the dose-response relationship between the severity of lockdown restrictions and mental wellbeing. We carried out a prospective shortitudinal study (one month between baseline and follow up) during the pandemic to do this and included 389 young people. We measured a…
Nature-Based Meditation, Rumination and Mental Wellbeing
Novel approaches for children and young people (CYP) in the prevention and intervention of mental illness are needed and nature-based interventions (NBI) may be clinically useful. This proof-of-principle study tested the effects of a novel brief nature-based meditation on rumination, depressive symptoms and wellbeing in young people. Sixty-eight university students were randomised to one of three conditions: active control (n = 23), indoor medita…
Parents' postnatal depressive symptoms and their children's academic attainment at 16 years
The aim of the study was to examine whether parents' increased postnatal depressive symptoms predicted children's academic attainment over time and whether the parent-child relationship, children's prior academic attainment, and mental health mediated this association. We conducted secondary analyses on the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children data (12,607 mothers, 9,456 fathers). Each parent completed the Edinburgh-Postnatal Depressio…
Depressive Symptom Clusters in Relation to Body Weight Status
Background: There is strong evidence for a bidirectional association between depression and obesity. Several biological, psychological, and behavior-related factors may influence this complex association. Clinical impression and preliminary evidence suggest that patients with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder may endorse very different depressive symptom patterns depending on their body weight status. Until now, little is known about poten…
Social network members' responses to friends' breakup false alarms
Social networks influence romantic relationships through friends' support or lack of support of the union. However, the consequences of friends repeatedly telling other friends their relationship was going to end but failing to actually terminate the relationship are unclear. Guided by the false alarm effect (FAE), and data from both student ( N = 273) and noncollege ( N = 226) samples, it was found that breakup false alarms were associated with …
When does anxiety help or hinder cognitive test performance? The role of working memory capacity
Cognitive interference theories (e.g. attentional control theory, processing efficiency theory) suggest that high levels of trait anxiety predict adverse effects on the performance of cognitive tasks, particularly those that make high demands on cognitive resources. We tested an interaction hypothesis to determine whether a combination of high anxiety and low working memory capacity (WMC) would predict variance in demanding cognitive test scores.…
Anxiety and depression in academic performance
Anxiety and depression are linked to lower academic performance. It is proposed that academic performance is reduced in young people with high levels of anxiety or depression as a function of increased test-specific worry that impinges on working memory central executive processes. Participants were typically developing children (12 to 13-years-old) from two UK schools. The study investigated the relationship between negative affect, worry, worki…
