This study adds to the existing knowledge base for CSH implementation, through the development of a user-friendly evaluative tool for ongoing data collection related to healthy school community process indicators, with encouraging pilot results. Using survey data, this study tests competing hypotheses about the nature of opposition to a hazardous waste incinerator. Using a multivariate model, we challenge some of the basic assumptions of the Not In My Backyard (NIMBY) label typically used to characterize opposition. This research examined self-disclosure between all possible pairs of sex of discloser and sex of disclosure target. Assuming that socialization encourages women and men to play different roles, men were expected to take the initiative in comparison to women in the first encounter. Longitudinal patterns of cigarette smoking and smokeless tobacco use in youth
Tobacco use was studied during 1977-76 (n = 2880) and 1981-82 (n = 2158) in a total biracial community of children, aged 8-17 years, in Bogalusa, Louisiana. White males were the early adopters of tobacco products in both surveys. Cigarette smoking decreased in all race and gender groups while smokeless tobacco use increased in White males. This report describes the alcohol consumption of adolescents and young adults who participated in the Bogalusa Heart Study, 1981 to 1991. Data were collected in three cross-sectional surveys of school-age children (11 to 19 years) and three surveys of young adults (18 to 32 years).
