Meat Supply of Alakul Miners at the Bronze Age Vorovskaya Yama Copper Mine (Southern Trans-Urals)
In this paper, we analyze what can be learned about the meat supply of the Alakul miners of the Late Bronze Age using archaeozoology, Sr-isotope analysis, and radiocarbon dating techniques. The study is based on a sample of domestic animal bone originating from the Vorovskaya Yama copper mine site in the southern Trans-Urals. The site functioned over a period of about two centuries starting around 1600 BCE. Cattle, caprines, and horses constitute…
A Proto-Maeotian Horseman Burial From Adygea
This paper reports on a proto-Maeotian burial complex of a horseman warrior discovered in 2023 in the foothills of Adygea (N 44.22787800, E 40.12983900). The burial assemblage included weaponry, notably an axe-scepter, a Colchian fibula, an equine skeleton, and a set of bronze horse bridles contemporary with the Novocherkassk treasure. Based on these findings, the authors date the burial to the late 8th century BC. Comprehensive analyses, includi…
Funeral Practices of the Final Bronze Age in the Southern Trans-Urals
The article examines the problem of interpreting burials from settlements of the Final Bronze Age in the Southern Trans-Ural region. The aim of the research is to identify factors that influenced burial practices during this period. Fieldwork and analytical studies were conducted at the Ogorodnaya site, and the results have been presented. Methods such as physical anthropology, radiocarbon dating, isotope analysis of strontium, nitrogen and carbo…
New Results of Radiocarbon Dating of the Finds From the Scythian and Sarmatian Sites in the Collection of the State Historical Museum
Were metalworkers itinerant? Interdisciplinary analysis of a metalworker's burial at the Krivoe Ozero late Bronze Age cemetery (southern Trans-Urals, Russia)
The Indo-European Puzzle Revisited
This book examines the impact of ancient DNA research and scientific evidence on our understanding of the emergence of Indo-European languages in prehistory. Offering cutting-edge contributions from an international team of scholars, it considers the driving forces behind the Indo-European migrations during the 3rd and 2nd millenia BC. The volume explores the rise of the world's first pastoral nomads the Yamnaya Culture in the Russian Pontic step…
Informative Capacity of the Sargat Culture’s Disturbed Burials
The article deals with a complex study of the materials obtained during archaeological excavation of the kurgan Novopokrovka 16 in the middle Irtysh river basin (Omsk region). The site, which is attributed to the Sargat culture (5th century BC – second half of the 3rd century AD), was located farmost on the right bank of the river Irtysh, nearby the group of “Princely kurgans”. Despite almost total disturbance by robbers and agricultural activity…
On the status and selectivity of the infant burials of the Yamnaya Archaeological Culture of the Southern Urals (based on the excavation materials of the burial mound No. 1 of the Boldyrevo-4 group)
Bioarchaeology is an important field of interdisciplinary research based upon the contextual study of anthro-pological materials. In particular, bioarchaeology of childhood appears to be the most specialised area of re-search, addressing quality of life and social patterns of ancient groups. In this paper, we continue the study of the infant remains from the burial mound No. 1 of the Boldyrevo-4 burial ground - one of the elite and largest burial…
A Find of the North-Caucasian Ceramics in the Elite Burial of the Isakovka I Burial Ground (Western Siberia)
We present the results of a multi-disciplinary analysis of a jug and its contents from the elite burial complex of the Sargat culture in Middle Irtysh Basin (burial Isakovka I, mound 3, burial 6). The burial, along with military equipment and various metallic import, contained a ceramic jug, the closest analogies to which are found in the production centers of the settled population of the foothill zone of the central and partially eastern region…
Microanalytical Investigation of Prehistoric Colorants from Uralian Rock Art (Ignatievskaya Cave and Idrisovskaya II and Zmiev Kamen’ Pictographs)
Uralian parietal and rock art (cave paintings and pictographs, or “pisanitsy”) represents a unique archaeological and cultural phenomenon, comprising 90 sites stretching for more than 800 km from north to south, which date from the Paleolithic era extending into the present Holocene epoch. The identification of the nature of prehistoric colorants provides an insight into their provenance, manufacture and utilization, as well as contributing to th…
Funeral Ware and Dietary Strategies in the Past
The article continues the publication of the results of multidisciplinary study of the Bronze Age cemetery Nepluyevsky in the Southern Trans-Urals, presenting the experience of studying the soil contents of ceramic vessels from kurgan 1. The pottery collection consists of 95 pots found intact or fragmentated in burials, food offerings pits and cenotaphs, as well as outside structures, i. e. on the ancient surface horizon. All studied structures w…

Bioavailable Strontium Isotope Baseline for the Novotemirskiy Bronze Age Mine
Labor and Food of Bronze Age Miners in the Southern Trans-Urals (based on the strontium isotopic composition in the Novotemirsky mine osteological remains)
The article addresses organization of Late Bronze Age mining in the Southern Trans-Urals, in particular the degrees of its specialization and the scale of exchange operations. The main object is bone remains from the cultural layer of the II millennium BC of the Novotemirsky mine. The species and age composition of domestic animals are similar to the settlement materials of the Sintashta, Srubnaya-Alakul, and Sargary-Alekseevo settlements of the …
Bronze Age Shepherds and Metallurgists
The aim of the paper is to analyze animal bone assemblages from seasonal Catacomb culture campsites of the Salsk-Manych Ridge and from the Mikhailo-Ovsyanka Srubnaya settlement located in the steppe Trance-Volga region. Proposed models of seasonal population movements are based on the animal bone assemblage, the slaughter age of animals, seasonality of the animal slaughter, animal ratio and identification of local/non-local animals. The Catacomb …
Bronze Age Wool Fabrics of South Siberia
The paper presents the results of technological, isotopic and radiocarbon analyses of wool fabric samples from the Bronze Age burials of South Siberia. It is suggested that the appearance of wool fibers in this region was connected to the Late Andronovo population of the middle — early second half of the II mil. BC. The location of the textile production centers remains an open question, because the isotopic composition of the studied samples (ni…
